Hey guys,

So a few weeks ago I noticed the car running a bit rough and when out for a cruise, the check engine light started to blink on acceleration - but then went away. Got home and hooked up the laptop, checked the history and see a ton of misfire counts for cyl 8. Figured, okay let me change all the plugs since I have not done that since I bought the car.

Well, just pulled the covers off to get to the COPs. Noticed condensation on the cover, and the smell of antifreeze. Great - so I start pulling each COP, everything clean besides the cyl nearest to the firewall, left side (is that cyl 8? Need to check the shop manual). The boot had brown crud all over it, and I see a tiny bit of fluid in the spark hole.

I checked all the other cylinders, everything is OK. Is this a bad gasket, or worse?

I really, really don't want to get my motor lift out of the shed....

So an update to this - someone on FB suggested this may have been just condensation that found its way to this well. I let it sit over night, all COPs out - cleaned up the boot this morning, its more rust - no sweet smell. I am thinking, what I did smell may of been what ever vapor mixed with the seal, plastic from the COPs, whatever else. After it got some air, the liquid does not have a smell at all. I am just cleaning up the COP now, hopefully it is not damaged.. Need to clean the well and then get the plugs done. I will monitor to make sure the issue is gone.

Did ya do a compression or leak down test?

Is the COP cover gasket missing or broken?

Make sure the COP cover gasket is in good condition. Apply extra silicone sealer at the back of the cover where the harness enters. Do this every time you take off the cover.

See the attached picture.

You might also check to make sure the spark plugs are still tight.

If you need to pull the COP cover might think about doing the rear head cooling mod as cylinder #8 is the one that often suffers most.
