I've heard it's a problem that the valve seals would go bad on marauders but I'm getting conflicting results as how to deal with it. What I want is to fix it and to prevent it from happening again which I hear can be done but I'm not sure how. I heard something about 05 heads which is just a modification to the existing heads but I'm not sure what it consists of.

Iirc the cause of this problem is that the coolant gets hot as it passes through the engine this not cooling the rear of the engine. If I'm wrong please correct me but would upgrading the cooling system help at all to prevent it from happening again after I fix it?

The issue lies with valve stem seals, you'd have to replace those or at your mileage just do a freshen/rebuild on your heads.

The "05" heads or more commonly known as the DC casting, had an improved cooling passage design at the rear of the head. This isn't a modification, its the cylinder head that was put on 2005 Aviators. You can just do the "rear cooling mod" to your current heads to prevent any cooling issues on cylinders 4 and 8 in the head.

Typically if you drive it more, the less it will billow smoke on start up. I notice if i let my car, or cars sit 6 months or longer there is more smoke.. typically if i drive it daily or drive it once a month then there is no smoke,... Some never smoke, some are random... zero issues. Just like any older car with valve stem seals, or heads been rebuilt and not done right. Factory, or repaired correctly, not much of a issue if you drive it 2 days in a row.

I wouldn't be concerned unless it is consuming oil.
