View Full Version : Oil pump going?

Now that I have my real oil pressure gauge in I am noticing an anomaly. On a cold startup it reads 70-75 psi. Once it is warmed up it will hover around 50 psi while under load, but will idle around 15 psi. I run all Ford parts when possible, so FL 820 filter and 5 qt. 5w-30 Ford synthetic blend. Everything appears normal to me and is operating exceptionally except that idle pressure when at operating temp. Do I need an oil pump or is that normal?

My vote is it's fine. I bet if you rev it to 1K rpm it jumps up pretty quick. My marauder has very similar oil pressure. On my Chevy 8.1L it has 10psi at idle but jumps to 20psi at 1K rpm and 40psi cruising.

It's fine my brand new stroker engine has 95-100psi cold & 20psi totally warmed up at idle goes up to about 60psi warm at 3500-4000rpm.If you only put 5qts in you're one short takes 6qts.

Thanks guys, I feel more comfortable driving now.

I believe I did 6, it's been a few months. But the dipstick read full. Also I remember an uproar years back about Ford making the FL 820 smaller in diameter. The one I bought was the correct larger one. Did Ford change them back?

15psi at idle is fine for stock engine. Cold temps seem fine also

The question in this post is precisely why the OEM gauge is fake. Most people don't know what "normal" oil pressure looks like, and can only guess what is anomolous.

That, and a little red light on the dash is more noticeable than a guage reading less than 5 psi. Hopefully, OP, you left the original sensor hooked up.

When i installed my mechanical OP gauge, i also left the idiot light wired up

Same here, real gauge acts like yours. 54,000 miles.
