View Full Version : Ideas for improved air intake?

Guys,
I'd like to get more air into the engine.
My set up right now is the Vortech supercharger getting fed air through a K&N filter that sits in a box above the rear air shock pump (front left corner of the engine compartment).
As you can see from the photo, the air box is not exactly palatial ...

I have managed to get a bit more room between the K&N and the wiper fluid reservoir, but not much.
I wouldn't mind adding a hood scoop , but there isn't a lot of room.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

In my opinion, I wouldn't worry about cold air. You have a massive intercooler that takes care of the air temp. But, that is a tiny air filter. I would ditch the box, cut the tube shorter and put the longest and largest dia filter on that you can fit.

I guess the issue is that I'm getting max about 7-8 of boost, in 1st gear with 5-6k rpm. At least per the boost gauge, which is a non-electronic autometer plumbed to the end of the passenger fuel rail up on top of the pressure sensor.

But your question is a good one - it might not be an issue.
I should perhaps get the car dyno'd 1st, and see if it approaches the ~520 rwhp that I was thinking this system could deliver.

What size pulley is on the supercharger? There's more to the equation than just boost, but you're probably going to need at least 14psi to see 520RWHP. And that is a guesstimate. The kit you bought can make that much power and more. I'd work with Chris at ADTR and Marty to see what you need to hit that power number. Marty should be able to give you an educated guess based on the remote tuning.

The pulley is 3.3 inch I think. Chris doesn't recall, I cannot find the spec at Vortech.
I'll send Chris and Marty a note.

My air filter was half that size and I had no issue getting 601 with 19#s. Seriously, it was like 2 1/2” tall and $20. I literally had a 1/2” clearance and I was kissing the core support and that was after I moved the Condenser an inch forward and lowered the new radiator underneath the filter. Plus it wasn’t even boxed in, just clamped right to the ProCharger.

I agree to look into the pulley sizes and definitely a real tune.

Once you exceed 20#s you might want to look into an Accufab throttle body. That blower probably has the ability to put out more CFM than what the TB can flow, at least mine did. But if your only shooting for 520 then the stock one is just fine. These engines breath quite well.

Having an intake tube vs filter directly on the S/C is different. The tube itself is a restriction. Then put a small filter on the end is even more restriction.

On a nice clear bug free day pull the filter off and do a short run down your street to see if the numbers change.

Per K&N*
"That brings us to size.

Use the formula below to compute the minimum size filter required for your particular application. The usable portion of the filter is called the EFFECTIVE FILTERING AREA which is determined by multiplying the diameter of the filter times Pi (3.1416) times the height of the air filter in inches, then subtracting
.75-inch. We subtract .75-inch to compensate for the rubber seals on each end of the element and the filter material near them since very little air flows through this area.


A = effective filtering area
CID = cubic inch displacement
RPM = revolutions per minute at maximum power

Example: A 281 CID Ford engine with a horsepower peak at 6,500 rpm.

281CI X 6,500RPM / 20,839 = 87.65


If you are sizing a panel filter, multiply the width of the filter area (not the rubber seal) times its length."

The panel filter would need to be 9.4"X9.4".

The filter I have is 127.25" in Effective Filtering Area.
