View Full Version : Time to replace AIR FLOW METER. Should I increase capacity (flow)??

I need to replace the air flow meter and I believe I have heard of some Owers replacing unit with more air flow. What will the change give the engine performance wise? Is this true and is it as easy as just replacing the existing meter with one of larger air capacity? Where will I obtain the proper replacement meter and purchase one with a gasket...?
AND: What else do I need to know...:D
Thanks as always for comments and help, Architect:beer:

One vote for NO. Looks like you have a mostly stock engine, this part is a measuring device, as long as your flow remains within the range of the original AFM, no gains there. Big SC or turbo maybe a different story.

Why do you think you need a new MAF? They are able to be cleaned with MAF cleaner, don't touch the wire.

Yeah, this, my black Marauder had the original MAF still working fine when I sold it with over 180k miles on the odo. Unless the unit is actually defective, you have no reason to replace it. It's not like an O2 sensor which gets lazy over time.
You also can't upsize the MAF housing without a re-calibration in the tune, otherwise the car won't be expecting the change and will throw a code for running lean.

Thanks for the reply...
The only reason I want to replace MAF is that I have a Guage that monitors engine function. Runs off OBDII connector under dash. It recently shows no reading for the MAF
gauge. So, I assumed that it had ceased to work.
Any thoughts...?
Thanks for all the responses, Architect

If your MAF wasn't working it wouldn't run for crap. Bring throwing codes as it couldn't monitor air flow so it wouldn't know how much fuel needed.

You will get a CEL until you plug the MAF back in, but, a quick check to test the MAF is unplug it and drive. If it drives the same then the MAF is bad. If it runs like crap then the MAF is good.

CRC has a MAF cleaner spray.
