Climate Control System Operation

I have searched for a little while now, but have not been able to find any information on how the A/C - Heater System functions. I am looking for everything that happens from the minute the car starts.

I am trying to determine if my system is leaking air.

As soon as I shut off the key, I can hear vacuum leaking from the heater box. I think someone told me this is normal, but I doesn't make sense to me. I am trying to track down an intermittent stumble in my idle. And after changing the plugs and coils, cleaning the MAF I want to look at vacuum leaks.

Do you have the Ford Maintenance Manual? There is a huge section on HVAC troubleshooting.

I believe if you have the system off when you turn off the car it opens that outside air door to vent the cab. If you have it on vent already does it make the noise / vacuum sound ?
