A long time ago I used spray on mag wheel cleaner which worked wonders. The problem is that stuff is extremely strong and will stain plastic almost instantly. I had used this stuff when the motor was out of the car and the intake was off.

Safe and works wonders on Aluminum "Simple Green ". Good results when washing the engine in the car. Simple green reacts well with the aluminum block and intake. Just wash off, power wash clear water for best results.
