Hello all , I know its been a while but quick question I need to do the front upper ball joints and control arm bushings on my 03 mercury.. The parts guy threw me a curve and asked if I had steel control arms or forged control arms ?? I have been dealing with him for years and he is pretty good been at it for over thirty years and even tried with the vin number>> I have already removed the control arms and the ball joint and control arm bushings I believe they are steel seem pretty sturdy and have a little weight to them can anybody advise on this if they are simply steel or forged ?? the reason I am asking is because he is coming up with two part numbers for the control arm bushings .. I am using moog ball joints and the part numbers are the same for the steel control arm and the forged control arm just hoping i am looking at it to hard lol i should just wait for the parts and match them I guess lol Well thanks in advance . Hey Bill,
They are either stamped steel or a steel casting most likely the latter possibly what the parts guy is calling a forging. Most of the ones I've seen are the castings. I bought new moog replacements for my black MM that are of the stamped steel variety. I bought them from Rock auto and they were less money than the ball joints and the bushings & they were considerably less work than changing those parts. If you want I can get you the part#'s off the boxes later today.

Thanks ED , that is a big help I had ordered a set from trq and they were junk seemed very light ??? I already ordered the new ball joints but I can always return them I am going to look into rock auto if you are saying that they are good I saw your post about N.C. I am glad you are doing well I wish I could do the same but need to be close to my children especially my daughter since the accident she is doing good but I need to be available otherwise I would be down by you... Thanks for the advice love to see some pictures of your shop sounds great ...

Moog RK line is the cheap line and the CK is Moog's premium line. The premium line are stamped upper control arms that are boxed and welded with their problem solver greasable ball joints. I've installed many sets on marauders.

The ones I bought are ck80040,ck80038 were less than $100 for the pair with shipping but it's been a couple of years. Recently the Crown Vic needed control arm bushings had a bit of sticker shock when Moogs were $40 for the pair.

Thanks they bolted right in I am guessing no problems they look like good quality with the grease fittings ., Another member recommended them also using the ck instead of he ck instead of the rk already have them in my cart with shipping they are about 160 for the pair still cheaper and easier than pressing the in myself .. getting older not as strong as I was lol . Thanks again ,Bill

Just wanted to say thanks to everybody on recommending the problem solver premium upper control arm and bushings made by moog {ck80038 & ck80040} they seek to be high quality reasonable priced and easy install
upper control arm I like the factory grease fitting and new wire holders they supply with them They were &70.00 each approx. from rock auto not bad being they are assembled and you do not have to press anything in well worth it, Thanks again Oh while waiting on the control arm delivery I did the rear cat delate that is posted in the DIY worked great !!! I think the parts were 32.00 dollars for the parts ... Thanks again, Bill
