Found myself getting onto the PA turnpike yesterday behind a shiny silver Audi S4. It was a few years old, the turbo V6, not the new V8.
Nobody was in front of him as he entered the 270 degree, right-hander onramp. The yellow "advisory" speed-limit sign says 20 or 25 mph. He was going faster than that at the beginning, and I decided it would be fun to see how the Maruader's 18 inchers would hang on... I pulled the shifter back into 2nd gear and started to steer.
My big blue ship settled into the curve, and the squat little Audi wasn't getting away as we went round and round and round.
We were doing just over 50 when we merged onto the empty freeway. He got to go full throttle a second before I did, and it wasn't long before I could see little whisps of exhaust as he redlined the S4.
I lost a car length or two on the jump as he could get wide-open before I could.
But as the tach swung north of 5,000 we started Maraudin'.
The Audi was hunkered down and boogeying... I could imagine the driver shifting his attention between the windshield, has tach, and the big blue sedan lurking in his rear view mirror.
As my revs climbed I bumped the shifter into Drive, but the Good Ship Merc held 2nd right to the redline and snapped a nice 3rd gear shift.
I was ever so gradually reeling the Audi in when he gave up. We had cleared triple digits and were approaching the tollbooths, so I squeezed the brakes and settled down as well.
Bet he's not posting anything on the Audi-boards today!

Yeah I used to live near Pittsburg! My real dad lives there, has for the past 10 years. He'd love to have a Marauder but he's a lazy bum.

Good story...Grandpa has an S4. I remember when he brought it home and I had my first drive. With the all wheel drive it is difficult to break the tires loose even with the hardest first gear launch. On twisties, the S4 has to be one of the best cars I personally have ever driven. The power is impressive as well.
I firmly believe I would smoke him in the 1320, but have yet to get him down to the track. I am actually interested in what it will really do. I can say however, grandpa was pulled over on day three testing freeway speeds on a barren part of I-271. He was clocked at at 158 MPH, and got pulled over 10 miles down the road. At his court appearence....he was fortunate to know the referee, and avoided jail time and a wreckless driving charge. He did however pay a $368 fine!

Funny, I thought an S4 would blow the doors off my N/A Marauder. They do like 1.6-second 60' times! My friend at work just bought a used S4 and I told him I would race him only AFTER I get blown.

I really wasn't expecting to stomp all over an S4 with a bone stock MM.
Well, it's not entirely stock... it has a Graco infant seat mounted in the back.
And, I certainly didn't stomp all over it either, but I was certainly reelin' him in. I didn't tell the story to boast that my stock MM could crush an 85 hp Honda with a fart can. I was pleasantly surprised that the MM did as well as it did against a pretty fast car.
I was glad to see the tone of the follow-up posts change. I think we all have a pretty good idea of what stock MMs should be capable of, and I think an S4 is at the top of our leagues until the mods start.
Also, the S4's seem pretty receptive to tweaks... so I'm sure many of them are much faster than a stock MM.
The tollbooths we slowed for were actually the high-speed EZ-Pass lanes... so we didn't get to blow out of the booths from a standing start. Even in the high-speed lanes the limit is 55mph though, so we still needed lots of brakes to stay out of trouble.
Cheers,
Greg
PS. You should really come to Pittsburgh this weekend.
Nice one. But aren't you the guy that told me to watch it when I was doing 95 down I-279 because you can lose the license? Way to nail him in any event.

I will have timeslips for everyone soon. I have convinced Grandpa to come to the track with the V6 S4 and we will truley know.
This will be the one and only test as he is trading it for the V8 S4 variety next month...then I'll show him his ass again!!!:D :uzi:

Uhhh... yeah.
The turnpike is no place to mess around either, but I still think they patrol 279 more.
Are you coming to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix this weekend? You're MM would look great in the car show!

I'm tied up this weekend, but we should maybe try to get together at some point since we live pretty close to one another.
