Last week was my wife's 62nd birthday. Since she was now going to be contributing to the family income with her social security, she wanted to take a little road trip.

We decided to head into the mountains of North Carolina. Instead of taking the Marauder, we decided to take the Mustang as it just seemed like a convertible type of trip. The first day, we took the Waterfall Scenic Byway. Saw 3 beautiful waterfalls including Whitewater Falls, which at 410 feet, is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies.

The second day, we drove the loop. We started on the Cherohala Skyway which is a fairly new road. At the beginning, the temperature was very warm, but the road climbs from 2,660 feet to 5,300 feet in the first 11 miles. We drove into the clouds and the temperature dropped about 30 degrees. There are several overlooks which offer beautiful views of the mountains. Here is a picture that was taken at one of these overlooks:

We then drove into Tennessee and came back on US129. As many of you know, this stretch of road is known as the tail of the dragon. In an eleven mile stretch of road there are 318 curves. Many of them are VERY sharp hairpins. All I can say is WOW!!!! This is something that all car (or motorcycle) lovers need to drive. At the end of the run is a little shop that caters primarily to motorcyclists. They have tail of the dragon stuff for sale:

Also at this shop is the tree of shame. Hanging from the tree are pieces of motorcycles that have crashed while running the dragon.

While we were at the tree of shame a BMW club took off on their run. There were several BMW's including a Z3 and a Z4. A bunch of Marauders would look good taking on the Dragon

Well documented Don...and I know what a great time that must have been.

Being raised in East Tennessee...those Smokey Mountains are hard to beat...anywhere.

And you are right...this fall we need to set up a Southern Marauders (although anyone is welcome to join) "Run of the Gap". I'll speak to the crew next Friday about it.

I ran the Tail of the Dragon last fall in the Marauder. It may be the most fun you can have with your pants on. It would be fun to be there with a bunch of Marauders. Imagine the fear in the eyes of the motorcycle guys when they see a string of big cars chasing them down.

My story here. (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5196&highlight=dragon)

I could never write a story as well as you did. That was great.

My wife rode with me. She was hanging on for dear life. I wondered about the Marauder seats in that run. The seats in the Mustang held us in place pretty well. Mustang is a 5 speed. I ran most of the time in 2nd gear. Got it into 3rd a couple of times, but quickly had to downshift back into 2nd on the hairpins.

That is a great loop. Been on the same route on my bike many times. Hardly any people know about Whitewater falls since it's kind of off the beaten path. I found it by accident on a trip out to Bridal Veil and Dry Falls. My starting point is at the bottom of the Dragon, ending at the bottom of Cherahola with BBQ at the little place by the river (can't remember the name of it). If you're on a bike, the cycle campground at Crusoe is a nice stop, too. And there's a little detour near Tellico Plains to Bald River Falls too. Been wanting to take my MM on the Dragon and Cherahola, I'm certain that would be a fun ride. I believe I'll upgrade the front sway bar first, though (already did the back).

Let me know when you're ready to do this Brian...as I haven't seen anything from Dennis on it, I can hook you up.

Yes, please. I plan on this trip after my front bar is installed as well.

Sorry for the Darvocet speak.
