I tried to install my thermostat today, what a dumb place to put a thermostat. Wasnt sure how I was supposed to reach it, so I disconnect it from the 3 hoses and did the swap on my workbench, and then reinstalled everything.......NO Leaks....thought all was well in the world. WRONG, went about a block from the house and it starting overheating. Turned around popped the hood and vented the steam out of it. It cooled down right away, but went a block away again, and it spiked up again.
I think it has a vapor lock in the system. Is that possible. And is there anyway to get rid of it with the vacuum set up.
I thought about just limping it to EZ lube and paying the extra to have them flush the system out. Or I can also maybe rent the vacuum set up from Kragen auto.

Was I not supposed to disconnect all three hoses. I am a bit reach impaired....too many double cheeseburgers, so it was easier to remove it all.

Also, as if that wasnt enough.

When I was swapping my plugs, they all looked great except for the rear plug on the drivers side. It was all oily. Not a residue, drippy oil......that cant be good either.

But for the block I got to drive it, the SCT, plugs and even that damn thermostat felt good.

if anyone has suggestions, please let me know or even call me...

oh yeah, I offered to send the guy with the silver MM a black rear deck emblem, but I never heard from him. Anyone else out there with a non black MM interested.

Did you bleed the air out of the cooling system when you were done?

I never had to do that with my Durango because that thermostat is in the normal position, so you can pop it out and the water lever stays put. Damn, on the MM, all sorts of fluid came gushing out from all over.

Go out to your garage and look at the "hard" coolant line at the top of the top of the motor. Open the bleeder on that line and burp air in the system and all will be right in the world.

Let me know the results.

and if so, is it okay to add coolant through that opening. I took that valve thing off, What a cool engineer figured out to use a socket head for the valve.....
anyway, I took it off, and looked through the opening and its dry in there, should there be coolant rushing by, or out of it.
The coolant tank did drop down a bit, but not much.

Did you run the engine with it open?

since I didnt see anything I thought my motor might be dry, so I turned it off.

The way I do it is when the engine is cold, and it turned off, I use that opening to fill up the system w/coolant and water using a funnel. Just fill it until it gets to the top, wait a few minutes for it to settle, and then fill it up again. Keep doing that until it doesn't settle down anymore and it stays at the top.

Now install that plug again, and start the engine to circulate it for a minute or so, shut it down, and open it up again, and if it settled down again, then fill it up once more. That's it. One other thing.....are you sure that you put the new thermostat in there going in the same direction as the old one, and NOT backwards?

Did you ever get an answer on that #8 plug? I'd like to know more about this too!

Thanks,

David

I found the plug thing, and it was dry in there. It took another gallon and a half of coolant. I rant it and it vented, added somemore....and now coolant comes out when I turn to open it. I am still going to check it when I get to my GFs tonight. I havent taken it for a spin, but at least now I know what to do instead of just pulling over and popping my hood and trying to look sexy to see if someone stops. Maybe I shouldnt have eaten all those cheeseburgers in the past, ...no one stopped this afternoon.

That oily plug makes me wonder.........I also looked inside the TB blade opening when i was changing the plugs, and instead of dry sooty residue it was also wet oily residue. On the Durango, that means the gasket is gone....they tend to blow out on the 5.9. Hope that is not the case.....and if it is, thank god I have 10,000 left on my warranty.

Thanks again everyone...........I will post tomarrow to let you know if it is working, or if I was picked up on along the way to my Eevil GFs house.
I think the waterpump would be a great added B-day gift, and she disagrees.......she is Eevil.

 Monster,
The same thing just happened to me after replacing the thermostat, plugs and tuning. Did filling the system through the bleed valve fix the problem?

Yes, the procedure outlined above by BillyGMan is the solution/preventatuve measure for this problem.

Tony, you have a air buble in the cooling system this engine must be bled and filled through the cross over pipe, you remove the cap with quarter inch ratchet fill the car through there start the car let in run and pour more coolant in the pipe this will remove all air I am sorry you had problems. Make sure the car is cool before removing the cross over cap

The proper fill procedure has been documented on the forums about 9-10 times, just do a search, but Billy G re-iterated it good enough for you...
