It happened to me too.

So, I’m on my way to work and my car gets bent. Not too bad but still...

Let me tell you how it happened. <wavy flashback sequence screen>

I’m on the northbound Southfield service drive, in the middle lane. A little Mazda Protégé exits the freeway and stays in the left lane, ahead of me. The light at Warren Ave. is red so I’m just idling toward the intersection at about 5 MPH. About 50 feet before the intersection the guy in the Mazda turns his right turn signal on and heads to the right lane at about a 45 degree angle. The light turns green so I accelerate mildly and approach the intersection. When the Mazda reaches the intersection, with the right turn signal still on, he makes an abrupt left turn across three lanes. Right in front me. And I hit the left corner of his rear bumper with the right corner of my front bumper.

I follow him into the left turn in order to pull over and exchange information. He doesn’t indicate that he wants to pull over so I turn on my right turn signal and tap the horn. We pull over into a gas station. I get out of my car, carrying a note pad and take a look at my car. The right corner of the bumper is scratched and there is a small hole in the top of the bumper cover where a piece of the plastic broke and fell out. The marker light assembly looks like it may not be flush to the leading edge of the fender too. I write down the plate number from the Mazda and I ask the driver (male) to see his driver’s license. He says, “I don’t have my license with me.” Then he looks at the woman he is with and asks if she has hers.

I said, “Lets call the police and sort this out.” And I pull my cell phone out of my pocket and I start to dial.

The guy says, “We don’t have to do that.”

I say, “Why? Do you have $2000 on you?” I’m thinking that any damage you can see is $1500.

He says, “We can make a deal.”

“I’ll just call the cops,” I say.

And as I dial they both jump back in the car and drive off.

Now I wait an hour for the cops to come. The dispatcher told them I was on the wrong corner. I tell the cop everything, show him the drawing and notes I made immediately after calling the cops and he tells me that the plate is legal. So, maybe someone will get picked up. I don’t have any illusions about anyone going to jail. They’d have to release some murderer or rapist to put this guy in jail. But it does amuse me to think about him in jail with a full dance card.

We’ll now I have to find a body shop and deal with insurance. I guess I’ll get stuck with the deductible. This really sucks.

I feel your pain...... no I really do feel your pain....had a mishap myself on sunday. Mine was my fault, everyone was fine. Thats why we have insurance I guess. I'm sure they'll cite the guy who hit you, if its his car. All is well besides that I hope, just take it in and let them do thier work. As far as the deductable, you'll have to front it nomatter what. If he does have insurance and they get intouch with him, you'll get a check from your insurance company later on.

Once the guy said he didn't have is license with him, you shoud have sat on his hood and called the cops.

Ther is no excuse for they style of driving he implies, and I am sure the cops would have agreed.
But he was a d*ck and left the scene of an accident.
When the cops catch up with the owner of the Mazda,
they will have a lot of explaining to do.

The misdemeanor of leaving the scene oif an accident will stay on their registration
until they either get caught or they try to re-register the car.

Well I called the insurance company and they will waive the deductable if I go to their pet shop. It's Jack Demner L/M in Dearborn. They're pretty good. I might have preferred Autometric (where the Benz and Bimmer people go) but I wouldn't have gotten the deductible waived and they would kept the car for a month.

This reminds me of a time when I was young... I'm mean younger.

crossing a major intersection in Yonkers (Central & Milesquare North) a guy with his girlfried blows the light and takes out the right side of my 70 baracuda.

Everybody is fine, we exchange paperwork, A WITNESS VOLUNTEERS the info that she saw the other guy blow the light. We get the witness name & #. I call a tow and leave the scene with a friend. There were no cops involved as in Yonkers the police will only respond if there is personal injury.

About an hour later the tow guy calls and says there was no car at the site. I call the police, they tell me to come in because they are looking for me in a hit and run.

After I left, the yoyo who hit me called the police and he and his girl left in ambulances. My car had been impounded.

I went to the station and showed the insurance & license info I had gotten from the driver, passenger, witness so the cops released me (after I paid the impound fee) I was young and dumb. The DA declined to prosecute the bastard for a false report.

A few months later he and the girl sue me for a few million. They had several witness now. All of whom live in the Bronx and happened to be on foot in Yonkers at the time of the accident.

The bastard won because Allstate decided to settle rather then fight. I was a student, only had minimum liabilty back then and maybe $2K in the bank. I got $0 damages for my car. I was so pissed a court officer (Bronx couthouse) had to restrain me when the Allstate lawyer told me the outcome.

I'm still mad about that one.

Demmer did my car Dan. Make sure they don't get all overspray like they did on my car. They did a good job but had a lot of cleanup.

Dan - Sorry about your unfortunate incident. Leaving the scene of an accident in NY is a misdemeanor. The detectives investigating the case will probably make an arrest. Hope it all works out. Recording the license plate # of the other vehicle was a good move.

Sorry to hear about your mishap.

As soon as he took off, my only reaction would have been to follow them and call the cops while your chasing them.

Of course, they would probably both lie. But the staisfaction of getting them is worth it.

In an accident, my procedure is to get as many license plate numbers of those around first.

People today don't want to be witnesses and give their names. But once you have their license plate number, you can give to the police. Then they will be forced to talk.

Today there are so many people that lie and cheat. The reason that it is so bad is that there have been are no consequences for it. So it has gotten worse over the past 30+ years. It is much worse than when I grew up in the 1950's.

Once the guy said he didn't have is license with him, you shoud have sat on his hood and called the cops.

Not in this town. If he wants to get away that bad I figure that I don't need to be the one to hold him up.

As it turns out, I saw a friend who is a LT in the local police force last night. I told him about the incident, gave him the accident report number, and asked him to tell me what happens to the guy. I realize that in Detroit this is a low priority call but he assured me that someone would look into it.

I thought later that I should have punched up the description a little.

"Officer, he came out of the car waving this big gun. He said that he wasn't afraid of the police and he was gonna kick ... what's your name? ... Officer Bennet's a$$"
