Is there any "Made for Dummies" instructions that anyone is aware for the SWI-X steering wheel controller. I searched the sight but found none.

I have a Alpine Head unit.

I am a mechanical idiot so it must be simple. I would pay someone to do it, but I am still pissed about all the money I have already spent on the sound for a system that has hissing in it.

Maybe a anger management class is in order. :uzi:

I wish I saw your post before I started a new thread above. I just installed one this weekend and was quite easy. First you have to make sure your Alpine has an infrared remote. Next you just have to connect 3 wires from the radio harness to the SWI-X. Tap a switched 12v+ lead from the harness (the RED wire) into the RED wire if the SWI-X. Nex do the same for the ground wire, BLACK to BLACK. For the third you need to tap into pin 18 from the main 24 pin harness in the dash. This is the light blue wire with the red stripe. You can either try to adapt a pin to add to the harness connecting the radio or do what I did and solder into the one in the dash. Cut and peel back the loom covering the wire harness. Next cut that wire about 3-4" from the back of the harness. Remore about 1/4" of insulation on each end you just cut. Get yourself about 2 feet of 18 gauge wire and remove the insulation from one end as well. Solder all 3 of the ends together and wrap well with electrical tape. If you do not solder a butt splice will do. I used a zip tie to hold the harness back onto itself to keep the wires steady for soldering. Use the electrical tape to tape up the loom you just cut back in place. Lastly connect the other end of the wire you just soldered in to the white wire on the SWI-X. For my install I used a 4 wire male & female connector from Radio Shack so I can just unplug the SWI-X if needed.

Lastly you just need to program the SWI-X. Follow the instructions to program it to setting 3. Then just follow the instructions to have it read the wheel signal then your remotes signal. Mount the transmitter where it can be read by the stereo. I mounted mine on the dash overhang over the unit.

If you have any trouble just shoot me an E-Mail, gagfish@gagfish.com

It's not a true Saleen, I actually built it myself based on what I believe Saleen would have done if they made one. Mine is a '95 and the first year of the real S281 was '96, since that's when Ford put the 4.6L in the Mustang, so that is what I based it on. I've got the 2v 4.6L Romeo and the 4R70W tranny like we have. From there I did what Saleen does: cold air intake with K&N, underdrive pulleys, custom Borla exhaust, 18" wheels, body kit and suspension. Mine puts out about 230 hp at the crank and 310 lb/ft. Compared to the real S281 with 220/285 mine will out-power it but with a 600 pound disadvantage it runs about neck and neck. I went with a custom dyno-tune by Jerry so that varies from Saleen. And instead of MacPherson suspension I went with Eibachs with Bilstein shocks and Addco bar, then added polyurethane bushings in the front, back and on the rear with 3.73s. This with the independent rear and 18" Y rated rubber will out handle the S281. It's got the same brakes, but again the heavier car will lose. But I can fit 4 people comfortably in there and it's more of a one-of-a-kind. The car has a lot more too like Jerry mod, torque converter, Dennis's drive shaft, ect. I'm actually preparing to sell her since I got the Marauder so if anyone is interrested let me know.

There are a bunch of pictures from all stages of the car on my site: www.gagfish.com. I didn't do the SC for several reasons. First, the SC is more expensive than the V8 and produces the same power. It's a lot easier to make more power out of a naturally aspirated V8 than an already blown V6. Second, the V8 was a lot easier to find. They only made 564 SCs in 1995. Lastly, it's a lot closer to a true S281.

For the really ignorant, what the heck does a SWI-X do for your car?

It lets you use the steering wheel radio controls on an aftermarket stereo. What it does is mimic the aftermarket radio's remote control instead of wiring directly into the radio.
