View Full Version : California Shops Recommendation?

Dennis Reinhart mentioned JBA Racing in San Diego as a good shop to install his stage 1 kit and rear sway bar, and I am also hoping they might do the cooling mod and level II tranny kit and converter, but if not I'll need to find a tranny shop that knows what they are doing.

Anyway SD is 7 hours from me, and so I'm wondering if any of you CA guys know of a place a bit closer that might do all this work for me; even though I am thinking of doing it in phases, I still would prefer the same shop do everything.

Valleyman told me about Fearless Gears in Fresno, but I would like a shop who could do everything, or at least a good chunk of the work, and they specialize in gears only.

Any recommendations as to shops in the Bay Area? If not, I'll head to San Diego, but thought I would check before making such a long drive.

Thanks!

Norm

The previous owner of my MM had some work done at JBA....I even have the receipt.

They did a great job...no problems so far.

Consider Hansels. Might want to call them and see what they have to say. Talk with the service manager, I believe he has a Trilogy S/C MM and it was all done at his shop.

Sac:

I would look for something MUCH closer than JBA for your relatively minor performance mods. I had a small local shop quote me on some suspension installs--VERY reasonable (although I installed my sway bar myself). I chose another local "non-performance" muffler shop for my exhaust work--VERY reasonable. JBA is kinda pricey, IMO. If you're planning on doing rear-end gears, I would just go to a local performance shop that works on a lot of Mustangs. Check your local Mustang club for referrals.

FWIW, I once went to a "performance" exhaust shop for a simple muffler and tips install. The rates were outrageous ($200+ in labor compared with $100 at the other shop) and the quality of the work was horrible. This shop was even featured in an article in Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine (but the shop owner, not the person featured in the article did the work on my car).

The Service Director is Tom Leonard, a MM net member. He has the Trilogy MM. Lidio came out to SR, CA and worked with dealership techs to do install. Best Contact is Nick, the Service Manager at (707) 543-7300

Please let me know what he says about your installs and the price quoted. I am thinking of havig them to the Trilogy install for me later this year as well as some other work.

They did a fine job with my under-warranty repairs.

Maybe you can combine your installs with a trip to the beautiful Sonoma
winery areas.

Best Regards,

David

I'll check it out, thanks. I appreciate the contact info. I lived in Sonoma County for 20 years, including 16 years in Santa Rosa, but didn't even own a car for half that time! I bought two cars from Hansel Toyota in Petaluma and found them to be straight shooters and gave me good deals on the cars.

JBA quoted me $320 to install the 4:10 gears which is very fair, so I have no reason to doubt them, but I didn't get quotes on all the work I wanted to get done so they could be higher in other areas. I just didn't want to drive 7 hours to get it done!

Thanks,

Norm

Just flashed on this: I thought the Trilogy S/C was illegal in CA?

Thanks,

Norm

You get four years smog approval on a new car from the factory certification.

After that who knows...

Jerry is in the process of obtaining CARB certification on the Trilogy setup.

Besides the first 4 years, you'll have trouble if you sell in CA because of the transfer smog. I know a guy who had this problem with his blown 350Z last month. Had to strip all the goodies to sell it. Pretty quick 6 banger when fully loaded. I guess being a service director has its privileges.
