View Full Version : A Solution for the missing carpet piece

While UI was installing my new dead pedal I noticed that on the passenger side there is a pice of carpeting covering what appears to be a gap behind it in a similar location to the dreaded right side missing carpet piece.

I then got to thinking about the extra set of Marauder car mats I've been meaning to order (With all the snow, we get in Chicago, floormats can get nasty-looking over a couple of seasons)

[have you figured out what I am thinking yet?]

I then saw that the floor mat material matched the carpet exactly.

[have you figured out what I am thinking yet?]

Then I realized that I probably would not need BOTH rear mats.

[have you figured out what I am thinking yet?]

Then I realized that I could use a portion of the extra rear mat from my extra set of mats and cut out a piece that slips behind the opening on the right passenger side.

[have you figured out what I am thinking yet?]

In fact, I don't have people in the back seat very often. Maybe once I get the extra set, I can split the rear mats up for 6 or 7 other owners too!

could someone post the link to the prior discussion on this topic?

yes...

yes...

yes...

yes...

One rear mat should provide four repairs allowing for overlap, six if very careful with the knife. But wouldn't any aftermarket replacement mat work here? Color matching may be important to some, but the spot we are looking at, really isn't that visible to the passenger's eye without looking for it. Actually, I've kinda forgotten about mine...

I can't be THAT crafty if I still have not gotten YOU to place an order for customized Marauder pens yet!

Any car mat would work too, however, I seek an exact color and texture match so that the missing section seems to "disappear". I will probably order the extra set of mats this week and report progress when I receive them. I will be traveling out of town for the next 3 weekends in a row and won't be driving much so it'll be a while before I report back on how this goes. I expect that someone may do this in the interim and report positive results.

I have a large hydraulic paper shear at work (I use it to make the Marauder notepads) and I will probably use this machine to cut the mats into bite-size chunks. It will do a fast, accurate and clean cut on the mats. I think some heavy duty double stick carpet tape will do the trick or perhaps I could actually sew the missing piece into place. I have to think about this and do some measuring....

Sorry, Crafty, thought I had placed my order already. Drop me a note at SergntMac@aol.com, and I'll send you my home addy. Or, just send them out to me at my office.

I want 3X more pads, and 6X pens, and put me on your list for the carpet patch too, please?

I like your "precision" approach with the cutter, should fit perfectly, and maximize the cuts. 3M tape is again, a perfect solution.

Thanks, enjoy your trips, shame you couldn't drive to your destination, eh?

I wasn't even aware that I had a missing carpet piece...I'll have to go look, now...

I was just looking through the Marauder-specific part numbers so I could order the floormats. There are two different part numbers there and I am not sure which one to order. I think I have the same medium gray carpet and mats as everyone else. Does someone know the part number to order??

I was just talking to my wife about getting another set of floor mats. So we could have a backup set. That's a good idea about using the back one for the open spot. Thanks slowpke!.

Slowpoke, i just checked the parts thread, it does indicate "Dark Charcoal" for the mats with the AAA suffix.
The "Midnight Black" designation was changed to "Dark Charcoal" in the Spring sometime, for whatever reason

Are you sure the missing piece is'nt open to allow the heater to blow onto your feet?
Or did I mis something?
Mine is open on the pasenger side on the tunnel near the firewall.

I did NOT check to see if the heater needs this gap to blow air. This gets more confusing all the time!

Back When I posted photo's and started this thread orginally I took my car back to the L/M dealer, who inturn contacted the Mercury Hot Line. The reply was " there is no fix out there for your car".I told him that I could understand that if there is a reason for the cutout and he said he did'nt know?I said maybe it's for the climate control thermostat?or for the heater to blow on your feet? or is it just sloppy installation techniques?
I never really got an answer.just that they know and theres nothing they are going to do about it now?I wonder if all of the Sport C/V's with the same interior have the same gap?I wonder if there is a reason for such a large gap on the passenger side carpet behind the center console? If it is by design it sucks.Luckly I only see it when I'm vac***ning the car!

The CVs have the gap too. From what I can gather some previous years had a power port outlet installed there under the dash, and the box of the port sat in the space of that square area of missing carpet.
Seems like it's a bonehead design oversight

How you coming along on this fix for the missing carpet?

It has been pointed out that this part number 1W7Z-54044g02-AAC (the suffix changes depending on interior colour) is a piece of carpet that fills a gap under the dash. Maybe it will work for the "missing " piece? on fordparts.com it's listed as "COVER-I/PNL TO FLOOR"

Good God, I have to stop coming here! All I ever get is more bad news about these cars, A HOLE IN THE CARPET? I dident know there was one!
You know a piece of advice my daddy gave when I was a kid, "Never buy the first model of anything" he reasoned that, what was new for us was new for the manufacture! and there is bound to be bugs.
Wait till they work them out in 2nd model, then buy.
I guess he was right!!

Bill, this is hardly an all new model. The carpet in qustion is the same for all Grand Marquis and Crown Victorias, and a "second" model year wouldn't have corrected it. It's a dies cut section of the carpet, that actually is hard to ntice unless you look for it. It is i think an area left over from previous model years
