Hey everyone,
I went to the local Wal-Mart today to pick up some oil and a filter for the MM. As I was searching thru the different brands I found something new. Penzoil 100% Full Synthetic 5W-20 motor oil. It was a bit pricey $4.34 a qt. but I figured that at least it matched the viscosity requirements of the vehicle. Has anyone else used it yet? If you have, I'd like to know what you think of it.
Thanks,
duhtroll

I've seen that too. I was scared away by the Penzoil name.
I've been using the Motorcraft 5W20 synth blend just to the left of it on the same shelf . . .. :)

Tim:
There is nothing inherently wrong with Pennzoil...I used their dino oils for years in my Thunderbird SuperCoupe, and switched the MM to their "full synth" 5W-30 for 2 OCIs, until I discovered it is NOT, despite what Pennzoil, Castrol, Valvoline, etc are legally allowed to claim, a true synthetic oil. If you want a TRUE synthetic oil, your choices are Mobil 1, AMSOIL, Royal Purple and Red Line (there are others, but they're either very expensive or hard to find).
If you are simply looking for a very good 5W-20 that has returned excellent results in all of the Ford modular motors, then follow duhtroll's lead and use the Motorcraft for half the cost of the Pennzoil...don't take my word for it, go to BITOG (http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=3) and see for yourself.

I'll be switching my MM to Mobil 1 at the second oil change. Probably will go with 5w-30 as I have yet to see 5w-20 Mobil 1 around here. Ford went to 5w-20 to improve their overall fleet MPG. IMHO 5w-20 is too light of a weight for the engine. I changed the oil at 550 miles per two motorhead friends advice and was quite surprized to see how dirty and thin it was after only 550 miles. The "oil" question was debated too death on the Focus forums. Most there, including one of Ford's own engineers, went to 5w-30 full synthetic. I tried the Amsoil in 5w-20 last winter. Other than slightly easier starting in bitter cold weather there was no noticeable improvement. In fact when I went back to Mobil 1 in the spring, my MPG went up about 2mpg. I've also been hearing bad things about Amsoil and hard, leaking gaskets if you go back to dino oil after having used Amsoil. Just my .02 worth...

Mobil 1 doesn't make a 5W-20...they do make a 0W-20, which would be good if you live in an area that gets very cold in winter.
I've also been hearing bad things about Amsoil and hard, leaking gaskets if you go back to dino oil after having used Amsoil.Untrue. 25 years ago, there were certain incompatibilities between synthetic oils and seal composition. Those issues are way in the past. You can switch back and forth as much as you like now, although there's no real point in it...AMSOIL makes an excellent product.

I received the info about Amsoil from two techs at the local Chysler dealership. Maybe its just relavent to Chrysler products as they have had gasket problems for next to forever on certain engines. Anyway, I'll stick to Mobil 1. I may try the 0w-20. Where I live it regularly goes below 0 degrees in the winter. We can go weeks on end without going above 32 deg F.
