View Full Version : 740 iL KILL
I have a BMW 740 iL KILL to tell you about BUT there are the "street racing Nazis" to worry about. Of course, this kill was at my private track. :)
Before I tell more, I need to know if you want to know about it (full story) or if you would rather remain politically correct (no story).

Dan

Yes... Afterall, it happened on your private track.
I've always found that there's something very rewarding about putting bimmer-driving yuppies in their place...

We won't tell the street racing Nazis. It's just between us.

What has happened here?
I though 'kill stories' were a popular feature here...:shake:

OK, here is the story. As I said earlier, this was at a large private track that I have access to. This particular track very closely resembles a 4 lane divided highway. It is mostly straight but there is one very high speed turn that has a bump in the middle of it that shifts the car a bit and can be quite unsettling. There were other users at the track driving at varying speeds. This happened roughly at 6:30PM which, for some reason, is a very busy time at this track during the week.
My Saab friend was with me and as we came up this 740iL I said to him, "Man, I would sure like to add one of those to my list of kills" Little did I know that this would be the day and the time.
We were both headed north on the track and this 740 was passing cars as much it could. I was also passing cars and happily, many of them were just yeilding to the "Crown Vic Effect." This 740, however, was not going to yield to the Marauder, Crown Vic Effect or not. Instead, he would accelerate steeply as cars moved out of the way thus making a pass on the right impossible.
After this went on a bit I could tell that our cars were quite evenly matched and decided that I would need to beat him to gas if I were going to make a move. As a car in front of him moved out of the way I rolled up on him with a full pedal. He was accelerating hard, too, but not enough to overcompensate for the 4 or 5 MPH of roll-on speed that I had on him. I was stuck to his bumper like the Intimidator and his car was not pulling away from me. This guy was obviously a good and polite driver so he pulled out of the way to let me by him. At this point were travelling in the triples.
Immediately after I passed him he pulled in behind me and was sitting on my rear. At this point I decided that it wasn't just going to be the Marauder that would get this job done; it was going to be the Marauder and I working as a team to out fox this fox.
As we came upon the next "clog" of cars we were both able to slow down. When an opening appeared I nailed it and drifted through. Up less than a quarter mile was another opening but I could see it closing so I went for it and made it. The door was closed and I was on the other side. This gave me a little room to breath but, shy of going onto the track breakdown lanes I was going to have to persist because he was doing his best Intimidator bit, too, and he was still trying to still stick me. (I did have a gap on him at this point.)
Up came this sweeping left hander that I was all over. To get a picture, imagine a highway type of corner, unbanked, that goes over another highway. There is a gently ascending and descending portion as it rises to go over the lower road. Near the apex of this there is a bit of a bump that unsettles the car quite a bit.
As I went over this section of track I began puliing away from him. There were no cars beween us but he was apparently unable or unwilling to drive this corner at the same rate of speed that I had done in the past.
There is nothing like seeing a BMW shy away from a corner like this. I am a former BMW owner and I know that his car should have been able to stick me on it but apparently this guy couldn't see himself to do that. :)
The next section of track is the busiest but I slalomed right through it and made it to a squeeze point at least a quarter mile in front of and before the BMW. As soon as I got out of the squeeze point I was on it again. By the time he was out he was more than a half mile behind me. He got snagged on other track traffic that I was able to work my way through. :)
As he came roaring up on me I stuck my hand out the window and gave him a big . I wanted to be sure that we were all still doing this for fun and not out of anger. All non compensated track racing should be fun, right?
We were back into lap traffic again so he was back on my tail. I saw a clear section coming up and matted it. Well, now he was going to try my tactics against me with a roll-on pass. I was in the fast land had it matted but it didn't matter. He was a half second aheard of me and had used his momentum to really crowd me so I moved right this time and let him buy.
With all of the track traffic he wasn't able to go much farther ahead so I pulled in behind him. At this point I knew that manuevering would carry me vs raw power so I decided to continue with the "finding the best line through lap traffic" method. He was able to stick with me for most of it.
My track time was ending in about 45 seconds and I could foresee my needing to "exit" the track in about a mile so I decided to go into cool down mode for the next bit. As I was pulling into the 'exit' for the track he rolled up next to me and gave me a big smile and a pleasant wave as he went by.
As I saw the guy it became obvious to me that this wasn't some average Joe. I would guess from the look of the guys clothing (his racing suit) that he was some 6 figure executive getting some driving time in while he was on his way home.
I did the research on this car. The 740iL has a 4.4 liter 32 valve engine producing 282 HP and 324 foot-pound of torque at 3700 RPM. It weighs only about 100 pounds more than the Marauder. It's peak HP comes in a bit sooner than the MM's does.
In summary: In a straight horse race this car would have me by a nose at the top end. Off the line I think that the MM would knock it out but I never had the chance to try him at that. For this particular track session I think that the difference was the willingness of each driver to explore the limits of their car outside of the normal "straight line top end' sort of stuff that doesn't require much more to driving than mashing the gas and holding the wheel straight.
If I were in a 740iL and I was racing another "me" in a Marauder I don't know who would win. Honestly, I would give the 740iL the edge.
However, that did not happen. In this particular case the Man and Machine matchup of the BMW did not equal the Marauders and I feel comfortable to say that the Marauder got another kill.
Best,
Dan

I thought they were, too, until I got flamed in a recent thread I started along a similar line.
On the other BBS I run were refer to these folks as "pseudorators." It is a term that we coined. Here is the definition for it...
Pseudorator; 'sü - dO - rA - tor
noun A bulletin board user who has been given no official capacity to moderate topics that he didn't start yet takes it upon himself to moderate topics anyway.
Synonyms Charlatan, Poser, Imposter.
I don't mean to take this off topic but I wanted to address the question. Getting back on topic, I will be happy to answer questions about the 749iL kill so long as I am not asked to reveal the location of the private track. :)

dan,
that was a great story!! i smiled and laughed out loud while i read it. the guy in the bmw was obviously as cool/good natured about the whole thing as you were. i missed the thread you referred to where you got flamed. had i seen it, i'd have had your back. this meeting at the "track" was obviously all in good fun and you [or the guy in the bmw] don't strike me as someone who would endanger others at the track with reckless driving. we've got a few hypocrites here who claim to know much more than they do. ignore 'em.;)

That's awesome! "Travelling in the triples" I love it!
Thanks for the great story... and kudos to being able to do it on your own private track.
A used 740 was on our short list before we bought the MM, but the economics major in me couldn't figure out why we'd pay more money for an older car with no warranty that didn't perform any better than the MM... thanks for re-confirming our decision!
Sorry to here the PC-Weiners were whining about you... I missed that story too... I think most of us know that there's a time and place to go Maraudin' and other times and places when its just dangerous and stupid.
Oh, and the "track" references... loved those too! Great story... If C&D didn't suck so much they should hire you!
Greg
A fellow man in Blue.
Well, the track references are necessary. It keeps everyone happy and I still get to tell the story.
My car is stock with the exception of the SCT Microtuner.
I really appreciate all of the kudos. 1. Thanks for saying you would have gotten my back. That is cool!!! 2. Thanks for the C&D reference. 3. Thanks for enjoying my writing style. I enjoy writing and I want others to enjoy what I write.
Oh, one last thing. I don't own the track, I have access to it. I am sure that many of you also have access to private tracks and I cannot wait to hear about your next kill on a private track.
When the headers and the charger go in I will have a LOT more KILL tales to tell. Just wait!
Best,
Dan
PS: I laught when Billy uses the "private track" and tells us about it. :)
It might be a busy summer for me. I got a J30 kill today. The only thing is that I am not so sure that they are worth many kill points.
Thoughts? Are J30 kills worth talking about?

Nice story.
You should try a real track. There is one an hour and 15 minutes from my house. I went to Midnite Madness last nite, 141 cars!
I have had a blast everytime I have been to the track and the kills are for real, no excuses disputing the results.
Thanks. I prefer road courses over the quarter mile. Give Lime Rock a try some tiem. It will blow you away. :)

Lime Rock will blow me away?
What are you talking about... seeing the traction light flicker at 100 mph as you crest the hill onto the back straight in the rain... or plunging down the hill and around that pucker-factor right-hander that leads onto the front straight with all of 10-feet of run-off if you apex too early?
I drove it very briefly in May 2000... you're right... that's an awesome track!
Lots there to learn... my palms are getting sweaty just remembering it.
J30? Is that an Infiniti or a 1-ton Jeep truck?
Greg
It was an Infinity.
It is good to see someone else who knows Lime Rock. I get to it whenever I can which is no where near enough.
That track is one of the most techniically challenging tracks there is. How many times did you go wide in turn 1/2? Have you ever hit the gravel run off at the bottom of the last downhill curve that empties to the front straight? I did that once and almost spun it.
I need to set up a track day there for a NE meet. That would be a blast.
Best,
Dan
