View Full Version : Blemishes on steering wheel?

I have noticed some mysterious marring on the grip surface of my steering wheel. A few of the marks look like someone laid a soldering iron up against the surface of the steering wheel.:(
However, it seems to be only on the upper left part of the wheel, at about the 10 o'clock or 11 o'clock position.
Here's the only theory I can come up with ... my wedding ring is gouging it up during some of my more white-knuckle rides. I admit to gripping the wheel harder than strictly necessary on 1/4-mile runs, for instance.
Has anyone else seen this?

is your ring just a gold band, or does it have diamonds or something else on it??

It is just a plain, narrow gold band.

Wheelskins leather steering wheel cover.
Don is a great guy to deal with and very honest.
I'll be ordering one for my MM very soon.

I have noticed some blemishes on the top of the shift handle like little white marks. No ring on my right hand so I have no idea where they came from. They won't wipe off at all.
Now, I have to look at my steering wheel -- but I don't use the 10 or 11 position. I am more of an 8:30 and 2:45 driver.

Hi 5,
I've been thinking about getting a cover or wrap of some sort to protect the leather. Maybe the fellow would be interested in becomming a vendor or offer a group discount etc.?
Is there any other interest out there?

Ooops....didn't mean to plug a person whose not a vendor :( Sorry Logan.
Don is a pure SHO enthusiast and the head of the National SHO club.
He might be interested...I could check with him.

I have been getting a rough spot @ the 10 - 11 o'clock position. This is where I usually grip the wheel. The oils and dirt on your hands will build up on the leather and start to wear the finish. If not cleaned & treated on a regular basis, it will wear away the surface compleatly (I have driven FoMoCo's w/leather wheels for past 15 years). I use Mother's leather cleaner/treatment wipes - they come in a round plastic can and dispense through the lid like baby wipes. You can really see the dirt come off! I use one at least once a month.

Hi, Krytin,
So are you saying that the leather w***** wheels actually last the life of the car with regular cleaning and treatment?
I guess my palm are extra sweaty as my leather wheels don't generally hold up that long, even though I clean and treat the leather quarterly.
The marauder wrap seems softer then the standard ford wrap so I was thinking it wouldn't hold up even "as well" as the normal wraps.
Thanks for the tip. It sure couldn't hurt.

No - they won't last for the life of the car (10 years?) - but they should hold up nice for 5 or 6 years if you keep it cleaned & treated. I also used to be less than carefull about how clean my hands were before getting in the car and driving untill I noticed the dirt/wear relashionship! Now I make a point of cleaning up after working on the car before the test drive!

This is a very old thread, but one day I suddenly realized I never posted to say that I "solved the mystery."
The wear on my steering wheel is caused by The Club (security device) I've been using on the Marauder since I got it. Doh! :(

Thanks for the info and the posts for cleaning and maintenance ideas. The Wheel Skins look like a quality product. Anyone with experience with the product? Any interest is a group buy? Any follow up with the Vendor? Thanks Dennis:cool4:

I have used the WheelSkins product on my prior Ford truck. It was nice as it gave a nice feel to the steering wheel, but it did not take well to the temp extremes here in Iowa and started kind of flaking in some areas after about 6 months. But I would rather use something like that every couple years than have the stock well wear out and be EXPENSIVE to replace to stock. I definitely want to get something to put on there more to save the stock steering wheel surface than anything.
