View Full Version : Intake Spacer Install Question

At Indy I won a case of oil that I swapped for the intake spacer. So I want to install it tomorrow when the engine is cold. This may sound crazy but although I have been fixing my own cars all my life, when it comes to my MM. I have this irrational fear of screwing up.

If someone who has already installed one would be kind enough to point me in the right direction, the spacer comes with a gasket that has an aligment ridge, is that what goes into a groove in the lower plenun ? The spacer itself does not have a groove, so is the OEM gasket used ?

I am aware I should remove EGR first, what about all the other things that are connected to the upper plenum cover ? Do they stay connected or do I remove everything that is attached to upper cover ?

Any help would be appreciated either by posting or PM. Thank You.

I won the other intake spacer (Thanks PHP !!). I'll be looking for advise as well. I have been told it's very easy, but just like Smokie, I'm concerned of screwing the one thing up, that doesn't get mentioned, because everyone else considers it common knowledge.

TIA!

Better off than me Jaiver...I'll be asking other people/my mechanic to do most of my mods. I'm scared of screwing up and I don't want to even try when I get an MM.

Wrong 'tude, bro...there is nothing more satisfying than doing the work yourself...you just have to know your limitations...otherwise, the only excuse for not doing it your own bad self is if the work requires special or expensive tools that you'll never use again, or requires something you don't have access to, like a lift or welding gear...

Look at how much you've already accomplished since joining this site...

Yeah, anyone who can survive the rigors of "debate camp" should be able to work on their Marauder

Hey Smokie, I cant give you any advice on the install, but i was wondering if you wer going to go to the dyno to see what gains you get??Not just for the spacer, the change, if any will probably fall within the range found within 3 runs Dyno (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11872). If I can feel a difference I will report accordingly and most important track times, my best 1/4 happened last year and although I have come very close to my best since then, the Indy results were dissappointing.

Mr. X:

My wife and I did this mod in 35 minutes....

You need only remove the EGR as it is too rigid to move around. Two bolts and a copper gasket. Also remove the black cover over the throttle cables to access one of the intake bolts. Unclamp and move aside the accordian air intake tube as well. Everything else can stay attached.

Take all the bolts, 7 or 8, I forget, out of the upper intake to free it up. I believe the spacer gromet faces up, as the stock one stays in place on the lower intake, again, I forget, but you'll know as soon as you pop the upper loose.

Have a helper slide the spacer in while you hold the upper intake up just enough to do so. You'll feel the fit into the groove. Then sit the intake down upon the spacer and reinstall all the bolts. Carefully though, tightening each bolt a little at a time working in a circle until all are snug. Do not over tighten!

Good luck...and if you do a search here, Fordnut posted really nice instructions for me when I did mine a couple months back.

I installed the spacer this morning, it took me one hour to install. I was clumsy and knocked off the new gasket off the centering holes in the spacer; in the back toward the firewall area.

I want to clarify that I won this spacer and my opinions will not be based on how much it cost me. My first impression on the initial drive was that it pulled better from a dead stop, however I was out of gas so I quickly discarded that thought.

After I filled the gas tank my engine had reached operating temp. I went looking for a straight stretch of old coarse asphalt that has the best traction; I wanted to make it as hard as possible to break free the rear tires. Found it, came to dead stop and floored it, got twins strips of rubber about 9 feet long,

The temp. today is 83 degrees, humidity 85% my car is stock with a Dennis flash and of course the spacer.

Conclussion: There is a subtle noticeable improvement in pull from a dead stop. The only way to be sure if car is faster is to go to same track with similar air and see if I can match or improve my best time.

I believe that doing a dyno pull only to measure before and after on this mod. is a waste of money. I believe that if you buy this spacer expecting a major difference you will be disappointed.

Let me ask you this, Javier, having a retail cost of 80 bucks, is there sufficient SOTP improvement to make this a worthwhile investment?

Let me ask you this, Javier, having a retail cost of 80 bucks, is there sufficient SOTP improvement to make this a worthwhile investment?Short answer: No

Longer answer: My results are very preliminary, if I go to track on a day with equal conditions to my best run and I improve my E.T then my answer of course would be yes.

I wish to emphasize that I am simply expressing my personal opinion on this product and my only interest is to be true and accurate to my Marauder family, I do not have any association or interest in any products or vendors sold thru this forum.

Easy stuff like re-tunes and new air boxes and a parts here and there don't count. I'm talking about new gears or changing brakes out or something...I'll let someone else do it I get dirty enough working in my yard:)

But yeah, you're right, I know it is satisfying....

I am up to changing the filter in the airbox. Anything more complicatred I use a system that has worked flawlessly -

1) I ask Scott how much it'll cost.
2) I hand him the money.
