View Full Version : Car Names

Dan

OK. I named my car. I wasn't trying to name it but one just came up. Car naming is something that my family has always done. Many folks in my 4X4 club (http://www.jonfund.com) also name their rigs so I know it is something that is quite common among enthusiasts.

Here is how the name came about. A friend of mine and I were cruising along and, as I mentioned before, the Crown Vic Effect was in full affect.

This is something that I ALWAYS enjoy and he cannot seem to get into the car without getting a kick out of it either. As we were driving along, enjoying the ride, not saying a whole lot of much, he just started speaking and said, "Man, it's like you're parting the Red Sea with this car."

And then it happened. The name just jumped into my head. Moses! And so it is. Moses is the name of my car.

The name fits in more ways than one. First, for the reason already stated. Second, because it has power that is surprising and unexpected by those who don't know the true origins of the car.

So, there you have it. Once I get some photos up and a link you can probably expect me to being referring to my Blue MM as Moses.

Does your car have a name? If so, please post it here and tell us how it got the name. If you think that car names are silly or don't have something positive to add then, please, by all means, begin a new thread (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=4) where those comments will be on topic. :)

Best,

Dan

OK, I'll go first...our car is "The Blackbird"...named after what once was, if it isn't still, the fastest aircraft ever made, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (http://www.sr-71.org/index.html). I think it's also one of the best-looking planes ever built...

As you can see in my signature my car is named "The Black Bomber". Since the orignal B-26 Marauder was a WWII medium range bomber and I have a black 300B Marauder it just seemed appropriate. And I just love dropping the bomb on those ricers and kraut burners who think they can keep up with me.

My Blue MM is usally referred to as "Dad's Car" or "The Beast".

RF,
Took my first trip to the new Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Center at Dulles Airport yesterday. There's an SR-71 Blackbird on display at center-court. Up close and personal, the SR-71 is quite impressive. Displays also includes a Concorde, B-707, B-29 Enola Gay and numerous military and other aircraft from the early days of flight through present day and includes the Space Shuttle "Enterprise". All I can say is WOW !!! The hangar building is huge and has an IMAX theater (watched the NASCAR experience with the wife and son) and an observation tower that overlooks the runways and approaches Dulles. If you are ever in the NoVa area, it is a must see exhibit.

Mine is either, "the big black car" or the "bloozmobile".

The van is the "penalty box".

Not to discount that theory, but wasn't the X-15 test plane faster to the tune of like mach 6.7? I know the SR-71 was the fastest production aircraft, and the fastest *jet* aircraft, but now we have the X-43, which recently reached mach 7, and they say it will do mach 10. Also, there are rumors of the Aurora test plane, the supposed successor to the SR-71, and it is only speculation as to what form of propulsion that thing uses, but I want one for my next mod. That plane is supposedly able to cruise between mach 5-8.

Then there's the space shuttle, which reaches something like mach 25 on reentry. Without wings, the Apollo craft would hit something like mach 36 on reentry, but both of these are really just gravity . . ..

Unmanned interplanetary stuff goes much faster than these.

My car's name is in the sig, as always.

Thanks,
-A

Hey, Old Guy, (is that what noobs call those who call them noobs? :D )

In that thread I did not have a name for my car. :P

Besides, some threads are good to rehash for the sake of those who didn't see the first or for those who, like me, have named their cars since then. :)

I have an autographed X-15 picture by Bill Dana. He flew the X-15 3897mph at 310000ft. And you are correct with the Mach 6.7 number for the fastest X-15 flight.

http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ctt9/data/rodney.gif I've always had trouble making friends so I bought a car to meet people. Now everyone is friends with my car..no respect. No respect I tell ya.

Haven't got around to naming the Marauder yet, but I call my wagon "The Ox." We had to change license plates here in RI a few years back, I went to the DMV, and much to my surprise the two letters on the plate issued to me was OX. Too weird, but then again my member number here was my pin and is a major part of my keyless entry. Probably just God keeping things simple for me.

I believe you are right about the x-15. It is my screensaver on all my computers.

The X43 is an unmanned drone so it's not the same, but still cool. Scramjet.

The X-15 also has the record for height in a plane. Baloons go higher.

And it was all done in the 60's !

I'll have to look for info on the Aurora.

Back to the car...

I'm not sure if I will keep the name but my friends call her the Batmobile. As in "Lets take the Batmobile today." And mines not even black.

SergntMac is definitely right about one thing...Mercman does in fact "take off" his Marauder. Mr. BigDog isn't far behind either. I was there for the official height contest in Indy when Mercman and BigDog went head to head so to speak. I think the official winner was Mercman being about 1/2" to 1" taller than BigDog. Maybe BigDog was standing in a hole?? Or...the pavement was uneven?? Who knows...all I know is that I'm 6'3" 290lbs...and I finally for the first time in my life felt small! It was a good feeling...BigDog actually told me that I needed to go shopping at the little kids store for my clothes! I haven't yet graduated to the 5XL Mr. Dog. Maybe one of these days! It was definitely nice meeting the both of you in Indy, and getting a chance to eat about 5-6 chickens together as well!

Best,

DanI don't usually name my cars. My wife calls our 1994 TAURUS SHO "Taury Boy". My son calls it the "Clitaurus" (sorry). I can't think of a name for a DTR Marauder...any suggestions out there. I passed on the "Red Bomber".

Yeah, that might be a theme for others as well. My wife says that I take better care of the Marauder and spend more time with it as well. So, "the other woman" is kinda appropriate. You figure after nearly 30 years, they would cut you some slack ----- don't hold your breath. :shake:

The lady next door says I'm gonna make some woman real happy someday, as long as I treat her as good as I treat my car.

I'm thinking...

Give her a bath once a week or more if she gets real dirty.. check

Blow her off with a leaf blower so that she doesn't get water marked.. check

Fill her up with premium fuel when she gets hungry.. check

Apply wax and rub vigorously every other bath day.. CHECK

Wake up in the middle of the night to see if she's still there.. check

Glare at people who get too close.. check

Brag about her to friends.. check

Size is not always an advantage. Back around 1972 a county deputy and myself rolled up on a fight (as backup) where a 6'6" 300 pound sergeant was getting his butt kicked by two skinny 14-year-old kids. :)
