View Full Version : Oil Cooler Installed

Finally got the CVPI oil cooler installed. Been planning to do this for a year but working on performance mods has kept this one on the back burner. This unit uses OEM Ford parts and consists of an aluminum oil-to-water heat exchanger in the bottom radiator hose, a mounting bracket which attaches to the radiator support crossmember, a different block adapter/oil filter mount, and a pair of hoses. I haven't seen it yet, but have been told it looks very much like a factory installation. Pics will be posted when I pick it up Monday (unless Todd got by there and snapped some).

Also got the Watts link installed. Front sway bar is painted and ready to go on next.

Logan & Brian,

Brian,

I just emailed you pics. I'll let you decide which ones you want to post (I don't believe in posting other folks cars...).

Looks GREAT, BTW!

Here are some pics that Todd made for me.
Overall cooler installed in lower radiator hose:

Closeup of cooler from driver's side:
http://www.mercurygallery.net/mmnet/showphoto.php/photo/5045

The block adapter:
http://www.mercurygallery.net/mmnet/showphoto.php/photo/5046

It's kind of difficult to make out the details of the block adapter, the gray thing to the right with the oil drip on it is the filter. Next to the power steering line you see the oil pressure sending unit. Just below the sending unit you see the 2 oil lines going to the cooler, just above the elbow in the power steering line.

Next week I'll post some pics from up top.

Thanks for the pics Todd.

I had the good fortune to see this CVPI oil cooler the same time Fordnut did.. on a 2004 CVPI on the lift at Team a month ago. I have to give a hand to him... he predicted, correctly, that it would fit the Marauder no problem, and it does. I saw his oil cooler on his car Friday after Scott installed it.

I really didn't give this mod much thought, though after seeing this setup on Fordnut's Marauder, I've decided to do the same. It just looks... like it's supposed to be there from the beginning, it's so clean an install. And cooling the oil can only be a good thing.

Time to order a digital oil temp gauge and sender while I'm at it.

Het, FN, what is the part no or nos for the CVPI oil cooler?

I have a 1/2 a kit available for sale plus shipping. The only parts that you need are the block adaptor + gasket and the 2 small bolts that hold the hoses on the adaptor and the cooler. PM me for offers.

Does the engine oil cooler increase the oil capicity?

On my air cooled setup and remote filter mount, it added about 1 quart of capacity...

You could probably also use the Blue silicone radiator hoses for the CVPI with the cooler.

They don't have a full blue hose kit that works with the 4v 4.6. When it comes to the blue hose kit, it is "all or nothing". Maybe some of the members who are techs who work on both the MM and the CVPI can make a custom hose kit that would possibly work on the MM.

The heater hoses, radiator tank fill hose, and lower radiator hoses using the engine oil cooler probably would fit.

The upper radiator hose would need modification

I am sure it increased the capacity, but don't know how much.

Wouldn't a B&M stacked plate be a better way to go, and simpler ?

Maybe, but I have other uses for the space in front of my radiator. And this setup is all Ford OEM parts and makes for a really clean setup.

Where do I get one of these oil coolers? Through the local Ford dealer? Summit or Jegs? A web site? I'd kinda like to pull down my oil temp a little bit and this looks like a well-thought out way to go.

All of the parts are available through your local Ford dealer or salvage yards that have totalled CVPIs.

The one for an oil cooler:

The whole setup, short the bracket and a couple of bolts:

Notice the oil pressure sending unit. If you have the "real" gauge, the sending unit won't fit without an elbow being added.

If you look around on ebay you sometimes find them. Or check out junkyards for a CVPI (possibly taxi also), or bite the bullet and get it from Ray (TheDealer).

This is a nice setup. Once the thermostat opens, the coolant will help the oil warm up faster. And since the coolant has a much higher specific heat than oil coupled with the much faster rate of coolant flow, your oil temp will closely follow your coolant temps. Very nice!

Each part has its individual number. Sorry, I don't have the list any more. Contact Ray (TheDealer).

Thanks, Joe. One more part needed is the bracket that it clips into. It mounts to the bottom of the radiator support.

Hummm ... The parts list that I have doesn't appear to show it so I guess I'm of no earthly use. :shake:

Someone with access to the FoMoCo dealership's official on-line parts list will have to chime-in.
