Does anyone know what type of axle shaft comes standard in the 2004 Marauder 8.8" ford axle? Is it a 28 spline standard, 31 spline heavy-duty, or a 33 spline super-duty? I can't seem to find this information anywhere. Thanks!

28 spline.

28 spline. So if you decide to upgrade your MM with the 4.10:1 gears, and a 400HP supercharger, it might be a good idea to also beef up the rear axle from the standard 28 spline to the 31 spline axle shafts, as is commonly done with high performance, highly modified Mustang GT's.

I don't think anyone with a S/C has had to do that yet with the axles.

Don't bet on that Duncan.

With an automatic trans and non-slicks it is probably not needed.

Rumor has it that at least one Marauder trashed its axles.

The only rumor I've heard on axles, is a true story. Paul's HP "Street Stalker" SEMA car. Toasted both axles and the differential at the line, car moved 12 feet on the green. However, that car is pushing 600+ HP to the wheels, 6 sp. manual tranny, and gobs of other power goodies. It was no surprise.

It's also rumored that 31 spline axles for the MM will have to be custom builds, nothing in the part bins like that. I'm sure if you called Paul's, they would help you with the specs, Moser could supply the cut easy enough.

But you're suggesting a major overhaul here, and expensive one and why? As one of the S/C cars on the street and racing, I'm not expecting any complications, nor see a need to upgrade. The 28 spline seems to be working okay for now, but who know what lies ahead? If, and when I eventually do have a problem, more than likely, I would stick with the 28 spline.

There is something to think about back there, and that's pressed in axle tubes. Best to throw some light welds around the tubes where they meet the center housing. It's a simple task for any welder, nothing will have to come out of the car, and the welds will help prevent the tubes from twisting out place.

Just my .02c...

and that's what I'm saying. Other than the Paul's car (which I thought toasted it's drive line, not axles) I haven't heard of stock axle problems from those, like yourself. who have S/C MM. (excluding of course the few with soft axle/bearing issue)

I've always said, that at some point, I wouldn't be surprised if someone *cough* sMarty *cough* goes to a special Ford 9" in their over S/C Marauder......

I've had this problem. Fixed under warranty. Might just have them welded at 36,000mi.

Paul toasted his 28 spline axles at some event in Norwalk, OH., in late May, '04. Paul also roasted something else at MV-II, but I think this most recent roast was a tranny issue, and not related to his 8.8 rear end. Paul has that locked down real nice now, and it was so for MV-II.

OK, thanks Mac. I wonder though if that was only because his car had the soft axles to start with, and with the S/C etc they were doomed anyway?

Anyway, not a big deal. Seems his the only one out of how many so far?
