Hey guys. Thinking of doing the silencer fix, just need to make a list of what i need.
you guys who did it, what's the best way? there's the peanut jar cap, and the PVC cap, which makes sense to me. is it a 2 or 3 inch? i'm thinking of spray painting it black.
what about a rubber seal or something. did you guys use that to keep air from coming in?
i'd really appreciate details. thanks. -shawn

Hi Shawn-
I am the designer/developer of the peanut butter jar lid modification. It is a simple matter of removing the snorkel and lightly smearing the thread portion of the jar with Gorilla Glue. I believe the perfect fit is the 28 oz. jar of Skippy but you may want to verify that- it's been a while. You surely must paint the lid black prior to installation or it will look like a peanut butter jar lid and your fellow Marauder owners will snicker behind your back. They might anyway...

Use of the Metco Carbon Fiber Intake Tube is the pricey way to do it. :cowboy:

Use the instructions in THIS thread: Silencer Removal (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6438)
The final product will look like this:

Or...better yet...as my buddy BruteForce suggested....call Aaron at Metco, and get the REAL "delete"...

Todd's 100% on the money with this one, Shawn. I only did the lid as a "stop gap" until someone did it right. Someone did and their name is Metco.

How much is this mod and do they include the red Rustoleum for the V/C's?

I used a 2-1/4" round, PVC end cap with a smooth end. I used a new hose clamp. Painted with rustolium.
It's not bling, but it serves the resonator delete issue cheaply.

OK, I'm a newbie MM owner. What does the pice do and how much better
does it sound without it?

Ditto Mr. Lou's question, why delete the resonator/silencer or whatever it is ? It's obviously an absolutely essential part of the Federally mandated emissions equipment and very stylish/artistic to boot! Also, some engineer[s] @ FOMOCO spent a LOT of time designing the piece for function, fit, service acessability, etc. Would removal subject the offender to a violation of Federal [felony] law w/a $10,000 fine?

Hi Shawn,
I used a 3" pipe test plug I got at Home Depot. It's red, but they have them in black. It has a rubber expansion strip around the outside with a screw in the middle to expand the strip. Seems to  seal tight. Serves the purpose and the red looks good.

Waht's the advantage to removing it?

I third that. Seems like a cheap and easy mod (if you don't go with the Metco CF air intake which I take it is strictly for looks?), but why do it? Is there a HP gain is smoothing out the air instake flow? Does it give a different sound or something?
I admit that the "J" thingy hanging down looks a bit dumb, but I actually like the look of standard air intake tube; It seems very well made and designed and is easy to remove to get at the engine on that side. I'll bet that if Ford provided a smooth plastic one we would all be "upgrading" to the one we have now! (-:
As far as metco products, I have upgraded to the Metco arms and they have made a difference in cornering; they are much heavier than the OEM parts. However, I am having trouble justifying the watts link, which is only .9 of a pound heavier. (I understand it's made better and stronger, but my cornering seems solid now and I haven't even installed my rear sway bar yet and the install looks like a bear.) Also the CF air instake seems to be a bling thing only, so I can't really justify that cost although it looks great. For now, the extent of bling in my engine compartment is a set of steeda billet caps and Ford racing coil covers. Everything else is stock.
So, is there any reason other than looks to get rid of this "J" piece of plastic?
Thanks for any info!

NormEventually Metco will announce the availability of their cold-air kit, which will consist of a custom, CF airbox, with a 10" S&B conical filter. The intake tube was the first part of this complete kit done, so it was made available first.
If you're happy with your OEM intake tube, then keep it. And whether you want to remove the snorkel from it...is your decision...removing it has never proved to do anything performance-wise.
Now as to the WATTS link...I'd highly recommend adding it along with the swaybar to complete an unmatched set-up for your rear suspension.

I would not remove the J shaped resonator unless you have improved the air flow over whats provided by the stock air box. The J tube resonator has two purposes. NVH and to provide a reserve air supply for the engine when conditions demand it. The Metco tube is a beautiful piece, high bling factor, but, does it improve performance enough to justify its $250 price tag? Take it a step further and add in the CF airbox. No price tag on this piece yet, but based on the tube alone costing $250, I think you'll be looking at a relatively high price for a CAI. Will it be a cut above in the bling factor? YES. IMHO the performance gained will not justify the cost.

I took mine off so that it didn't look like there was a big plastic elephant booger hanging from my air intake. It distressed me.

LMAO! That is as good a reason if not better than any I have seen so far!
Thanks,

....and last but not least....
The Helmholtz Resonator tube quiets compartment db's under WOT. You will experience absolutely NO gains, nor losses, nor....anything....aside from a cool sound under WOT that is undesirable to some folks ears.
Remember the old school hotrods with big azz 4-barrel carbs? And that awesome sucking sound under WOT? That's it basically.
If you have a big pocket book, and that need for bling....go with the metco tube. Otherwise, cap it off and drive on!
