View Full Version : I Saw Something Interesting this Morning

"The" City is gearing up for the RNC next week (ugggghhhh!! -- more traffic and tourists), so the police presence is even higher than usual.
As I was driving across town, near the U.N. and its protected zone, there were at least 10 K-9 patrol units (either CV's or Imps). Each car was marked with the K-9's name, which I thought was cool. I always wonder, who gets to pick the dog's name? Anyone here know?
Of all the names I saw this morning, I liked "Lightning" the best. If I got to name the dog for my unit, I would call it "Marauder" - that should scare the crap out of the terrorist wannabes.
I know that there are a number of LEO's on this site. Anyone here work in the K-9 unit? If so, is it as cool, as I think it is?

If I don't ever become a police officer, which I have seriously considered, I am going to buy myself one of those civilian dogs.
Trained the same way to do all kinds of cool tricks and protect your family in respond to only command, not your attidude or someone elses (stranger or otherwise). You know, the kind of dog that if a stranger walks up to him and starts roughing it up...it won't do a thing. But if you tell that dog to attack, that person is going to loose an arm. If you tell the dog to back off while it's chasing someone down (you realize it's grandma) that dog will do so, and immediately come back to your side.
Yeah, $8-45k for one of those dogs. I like the German Shepard specifically...but I don't like the more "sloaped" back they've come to have, I like it a little more straight. That and the dobermans.
WHOA! No one is going to mess with me or my family when they've got some 140lb beast chewing their arm off and me with rifle at hand.
Not to mention I'll have a big black durango like Marty so I can take our family friend everywhere:up:

As far as I know the LEO picks the name.
Our department has two K9's....both officers have picked their dogs names.
Ronin and Hogan are their names.

Hmmm...I forgot about the convention next week. I am going to be in NYC for the U.S. Open. When I was there a few years ago, there was a UN meeting going on and my hotel was so full of secret service agents that you could not breath without someone asking you what you were doing.
Oh well, I hope there is not too much crap to deal with getting in and out of Manhatten. :depress:

MY SPELLING IS BAD- No really...Almost MAD3R bad...
I know a little courtesy of a guy I know who's a broker for LE agencies in the southwest...The dogs are ALMOST exclusively German Shepards or Belgian Malinouis. The dogs are typically imported from the Dutch or Germans. Dogs respond best single syllible names and receive their work commands in Dutch or German. "Lightning" is likely "Blitz" but was named in English on the car for P/R reasons. Hitler messed up the word blitz forever. The dogs are typically 1-2 years old when imported and already named. Explosive detection dogs and body finders are usually 3-4 years old when imported.

Yeah, my neighbor has a german shepard puppy BEAUTIFUL color and man does he look mean. If I were looking for a german shepard,I`d want him mixed w/ Belgium Malimois.
NYC will be a hectic place starting on Sunday, but.. New York`s Finest has it covered.

As far as I can remember, the Belgium Malinois is partly shepard...just slightly different bone structure and darker in color and more aggressive?

I have a female mally - named Kosta. They branched off (maybe) from the GSD over 100 years ago! They are lighter/faster - hips are higher than GSD. Usually a higher energy dog than the GSD - most can easily clear a 6 foot fence @ a dead run! If you're looking for family protection the GSD or Malinois are an excellent choise. The GSD used to be my favorite but after a few mallys I'm hooked! You could save some money and check the Belgium Shepard resque sites on the internet - with careful selection you can give a good home to a good animal who will bond to you/family and you can train them yourself w/excellent results! NOBODY comes near my house or family w/out Kosta going on alert! She will display some agression to uninvited strangers but is a real snuggler with anyone who is introduced as a friend! Watch out for some breeders who have been crossing them with pit bulls! I guess some of these hybrids are ok but most I've seen are a little too scary for me.

What FiveO said is true.
Good info.:bows: :bows: :bows:
I've been wrong before and more than likely I'll be wrong again sometime.
Maybe it will be now:
The Malinois (due to the overbreeding of the GSD) is also less prone to hip problems that can shorten the career of a working dog.
:soap: Krytin- you break my heart man...I think Pits are great dogs that draw bad owners. I rescued an Akita a few years ago that was a former guard dog in a Meth. lab. When the place was busted- he went to the corner and sat down waiting for the LEOs to finish their business- the bad guys had stopped feeding him to make him "meaner"- I guess he got even.
He weighed 80lbs. and had never been groomed when I got him. He was 120lbs last I heard and the best dog ever (last I heard- the ex got him in the split). Broken spirit? Nope- I broke up a street fight in an apartment complex (Bedford, TX) and he held 8 drunks peacefully at bay until the LEOs arrived. I never even drew my pistol. All with hand signals...very smart pup.
Fine dog with some socialization issues... Love and a "Dog Whisperer" approach eventually worked this scarred canine up to adopting a small kitten. I miss Moki (his former name was Chainsaw) every day.
I'm drawn to "bad breed" rescue dogs- they need a second chance. Coli and I will probably adopt a Pit when the 4 year old boy is a little bigger.

So, the bottom line is if I become an LEO in a K-9 Unit, I will be able to get "Stanley" and "Stella" painted on the side of the car, right?

Yes!- In fact, I think you should find a emblem for the S/P that would pay tribute to your "babies"...Too bad there was never an emblemed vehicle called the "SS"- that would have been great.

I agree - IF you understand the dogs needs AND are willing & able to meet them, ALL good dogs deserve a good and loving home. The right dog with the right owner. My comment was only to point out that SOME pits - due to improper/irresponsible breeding - can be dificult. This really applies to any breed!
Help out a dog in need & check out the resque orginizations for the breed(s) you like!

Seriously, dobermans harder to train than shepards and results are not so impressive. But some people really likes those dogs aestetics.

Cyclone is not standing only for a gas name... it's a weather termin at first place.
FYI: during the WWII Mercedes Benz produce cremators for german concentration camps. All those devices has Silver Star emblem on them. Modern days DaimlerChrysler cars runs with _EXACTLY_ the same nazi symbols. Shall we wish painfull death for all americans who buying Benzes?

Although this is an intersting thought, it is not quite the same thing.
I think she is put off because he suggestion of the name would seem to honor or glorify the gas used in the chambers. Suffice it to say, more than one person was offended. In my opinion the suggestion of the name is in poor taste.

A retired K9 from our Sheriff's Dept name was Cyclone. Her name had absolutely nothing to do with Nazis, the SS, death camps, ect. The only thing she had to do with gas was if she ate something that didn't agree with her. Very nice dog, involved in many cases. Unfortunately she passed away two weeks ago after being retired for four years.

I understand the point y'all are trying to make and the I don't think anyone is disputing the facts you state. Something so awful happened that millions of people were robbed of life, property, and the fabric of their faith simply because of who they were born to be and how they believe. Hitler was an earth born demon. The actions of this bastard and his followers changed the world forever. We don't associate Blitz, Zyclon, Panzer with their original origins anymore- the are bastardized words that we associate with the support of ethnic cleansing.
There are people out there who dispute that the events ever occured. The reference itself is hurtful. I don't want to think y'all meant to be hurtful. I will if you don't do the right thing. I'm sad now over a mistake- don't make me angry over something worse.

No. It's rudder was disabled by a torpedo fired from a Catalina sea plane. This gave the British navy time to catch it, and they pounded it with their heaviest warships for hours. Not one shot below the waterline penetrated the armour.
In the end, the Captain scuttled the Bismark rather than surrender it.
A good name for a hard working dog.

Do you know what term "sarcasm" means? GreekGod's "good dog name" is sad sarcasm.
Name meaning can be hurtful, and like with my example of Benz's trade mark can be used by purpose. Benz refused change it's logo after WWII, the brand look was more important than millions of burned people. It is sad that people around here do not know (and do not want to know) historical facts and meanings of some things. When they hear about bad stuff they just blame the person who bring it to the light, like it just happened. Money talks.

Ahh History Time.
IT was a swordfish Bi-plane, not a Catalina.
All her Guns had been distroyed, she had no offensive power left, and she was taking on water. She WOULD have sunk, eventually, but she did blow her scuttling charges as well. Her armor betl was intact, but the fires below deck would have destroyed her as well.
