Unless something drastic happens, I travel from Albuquerque, New Mexico (home) to Canon City, Co. next wednesday to pick up my Marauder. I'm trading my '02 CV Sport in on it. The Marauder is an '03 with 26,000 miles on it. Price was 20,000. I did a search for "VIN", but the results did'nt answer all my questions. My VIN will be xxxxxxxxxxX612197. The first 10 digits are all the same, right? Anybody have any info from the sequential portion of the VIN?

Thanks

It appears that the first 8 digits are the same. However, 9-10-11 could be "03X, 23X, 33X, 43X, 63X or 73X". :dunno:

It's actually 13X.

Found out the build date was 06/02. Could it possibly have a factory sunroof with that date? I don't know if the sunroof is stock or factory.

Could it possibly have a factory sunroof with that date? No. No only aftermarket sunroofs for 2003. Ceiling compartment is in the way and has to be customized. Ask MartyO.

Ah, one of the very rare "13X" Marauders.

What we know about sequential VINs right now, is that the Marauder began at 600000. The oldest Marauder VIN I've seen is 600045. Marauder VINs are co-mingled with other panther frames at the St. Thomas assembly plant, and a Marauder can pop up almost anywhere after 600000.

The '03 VIN used the frame number M75 in the VIN, which identifies it as a Gran Marquis in most databases, including insurance companies. The '04 has it's own frame number of M79, which identifies the '04 as a Marauder.

Yes, we have different "?X" numbers, as it has been explained. I haven't nailed down exactly why yet, I suspect it's a STAP run number of some sort.

BTW, there is no identification of "300A" or "300B" by VIN, other than tracking the last six numbers. Your vin is clearly a 300A, but I don't know what VIN was the first 300B. Maybe some of our 300B owners could look at their DOB and VIN and give us an idea where they began? I believe it was somewhere around 18 Nov. 03.

Welcome to the club, hope this helps...

That 9th character in the 17 (alpha & numeric) character VIN is the "check digit". Basically determined by a mathematical formula based on variable, pre-determined number values for other characters in the VIN (depending on where they appear)added together and divided by 11....honest. Its use is a safeguard to determine if someone has illegally altered the VIN. For you LEO types; have you ever run a VIN in NCIC and had it come back something to the effect that it "failed check digit" or "doesn't meet check digit standards" or "doesn't conform". That's what thats all about. Usually all a response like that really means is that the comm operator ran the VIN with a typo in it or the VIN on registration document has a typo; (or pre 1981 VIN or some screwy foreign "grey market" sled) but also could be VIN really is altered or counterfeit. The check digit theoretically can be anything from 0 thru 9 and X (representing the number 10). Next digit (10th) is year, followed by a character (11th) for the plant followed by 6 digit sequential prod number you mentioned. Sorry bout the long explanation detail; thirty year plus Miami P.D. auto theft guy...really into this arcane VIN stuff. BILL

I have seen that "Check digit fail" a couple of times....pretty rare though.

Get the full VIN to RoylPita...he should be able to run it and get the specifics.

PJR,

Thanks for the VIN. The club is keeping a list of vehicle VINs and build dates.

I know the Marauders share the 600000 sequence with Grand Marqs - the CV's have a 100000 sequence in their VIN.

Enjoy the car. I love mine.

Don't buy X612197! It's haunted by the ghost of Elena Ford's common sense.

And the digits add to 26 = 2 times 13 !!! Coincidence?? I think not.
