My day off and the weather was excellent , I decided to make and install my own Ram Air Induction System which was a modified Flex-a-spout down spout extension , and an angled portable air conditioner hot air exhaust head. the head was used as an outside cold air intake which was modded to connect to the flex-a-spout.
A little trimming of where the intake was mounted had to be done and a little cutting to direct where the cold air was to enter the moddified Air Box directly to the box.
I've posted numerious pictures to give all a little flavor how this was done , from the entrance through the tube and into the air box.
I don't know if will yield any increase in Horsepower but until I have Dennis Reinharts Cobra exhaust system in place , I will then Dyno the car and get the results.
I will say this though that in testing my ride there seems to be a diffrence after going over 60MPH in acceleration.
Im looking foward to seeing if this mod will make a little diffrence. :type:
:UPDATE: It was sugested by Zack (thanks Zack) that I put some sort of screen in front of the opening. Today I did just that so as to prevent items from getting sucked up in to the Air Box like the four leaves that were stuck onto the air filter...

Wow... I've got to study those pics some more after I shake off the dizziness. What if anything besides the bottom of the airbox did you have to modify?
You sir are a true tinkerer. :bows:  for your effort.

I had to trim the plastic that connects the front of the bumper to the lower radiator shroud so I can fit the intake head piece...

that's a great job. great idea, I want to try it with a reproduction scoop from the 68 - 69 Olds W-30s that went under the bumber on those cars, might fit nice in that area of the MM
That is the best looking home made Ram Air Ive ever seen.
Yoou might want to consider putting some window screening over the inlet.
Good work :D

I believe I'll try to get this mod done over the winter. I like what you did, but since I'm just finishing up my carbon fiber air box, I'll probably try to make my scoops from carbon fiber. Looks great, though.

Im looking foward to seeing if this mod will make a little diffrence. :type:I did something similar using aluminum ducting. It was OK. I seem to notice a little difference at highway speeds. I just finished redesigning mine. I switched over to ABS and PVC piping after reading this post. Makes sense not to use a material that conducts heat easily. I used 2" pipe and had a 6" wide rectangular inlet. The round end was 3", so I needed a reducer. The on the air filter side I created a shield out of aluminum. I will insulate this later. I used a 3" to 2" reducer on this end too but to make the air outlet going to the filter bigger.
Actually I would call mine a cold air mod.
All these creative juices flowing. :D

Now this is what I'm talking about! If you could, post some pics of how you routed the inlet hose. I tried some things with mine, but, due to restrictions in my designs, I never made it permanent. One other thing, I'm not sure if ram air will show any gains on a dyno. It seems to me the car has to be moving to "ram the air."

Unless ya got a really powerful fan in front of it!

the flexable dryer type? ducting you used cant carry very much CFM.....with your modded box can you use the factory inlet & the "ram air inlet" My 71' Mach 1 had much more upen space & less restricted route to the induction system..... where are the pictures of the modded box? :thinker:

There's no need to use hardware store stuff. You can buy all the scoops, hoses, clamps, etc. you need from http://www.ramairbox.com
They've been around for years. Used some of their stuff on my '72 GS and it worked great.

And if y'all don't like any of those choices, y'all can head back to the FMC parts bins, where much of MM originated.
Before you do, stop by any local used car dealeship, or, boneyard, and seek out a 1991 Gran Marquis, it was the last year of the "box" body design. Pop the hood and study the cold air "induction" path to the "intale," and you'll find a perfectly formed 4"X1.5" scoop and likewise duct work that should be an easy (and inexpensive) way of ducting outside fresh cold air into our OEM air boxes. Just pipe it into the box under the filter line, and enjoy the benefits or more cold air invited into the "induction" path.

Looks better than the one with the dryer exhaust flex tube and duct tape, although I doubt if there's much difference in function.
Signing off from redneck country.

Here's some pics of what I was describing. The scoop can be trimmed back for a "straight in" air path, and the hose seems perfect for running under the radiator core and into the bottom of the MM air box. The "force" will come from the forward movement of the car, and it's air from outside the engine bay. Tailor to taste, but you couldn't ask for a better start on things.
