For your perusal,
This is a rather lengthy read but it represents the very latest thinking
in the industry as to when you should change brake fluid.

I generally tend to be quite the maintenance nazi, changing out filters and such earlier than recommended. Still, in all the vehicles I've owned I've never once changed brake fluid. I haven't read the entire article you linked yet, but I'm curious what interval should be used between brake fluid flushes. Or do you just use the test strip like described in the article and change as necessary? I'd like some fixed milage or time interval to go off of.

A very timely article. I just changed brake fluid in my CV yesterday. First time in 3 years (I've only put 60,000 km on in those 3 years).

Thanks Rumble.

Brake fluid like transmission fluid are rarely changed by the average person. :dunno: why. Thanks for the info.

Statistically Ford owners (as a hole mind you)spend the least amount of $$ on maintenence as compared to other domestics. Imports were very high and dealer loyalty also tended to follw suit ie. Import owners spend big $ at the dealer for maint.

There in lies the dilemma. The article says to check the fluid using the indicator strip. So far I have only found them available in large quantities. 100 strips for $55.00. But, the search continues.

I wonder if having the system flushed and fluid changed when you replace brake lining would be frequent enough? That'd be easy to remember that way.

That's how I do it. Since I tend to tool my own cars, it's easier when I change the rotors and pads, just to bleed the brakes enough to run fluid all the way through them.

While everything's apart . . . might as well!

Suggestion,
Change fluid every 2 years and time it with a 'wheels off for cleaning' activity. You will be amazed how dirty the fluid gets in just 2 years.
BTW, remember the turkey baster trick -- suck out all of the fluid in the master cylinder reservoir, wipe out the inside of the reservoir, then fill with CLEAN fluid before starting the bleeding procedure.
