View Full Version : The Most Appealing Cars Sometimes Sell Poorly!

The Mercury Marauder is a very good example of the old saying..."The most appealing cars sometimes sell poorly!" Why wouldn't people flock to Lincoln-Mercury showrooms to grab onto 2003 and 2004 Marauders? They are wonderful cars with everything included for driving fun and comfort. They look great, ride great, accelerate and corner great (and they can even be readily improved). I don't consider the price too high, especially when the discounting and rebates are taken into consideration. Why a 2004 Hyundai XG350L sells for almost $ 27K, and they don't discount them very much.

IF Ford/LM priced this car at $30,000 from day one,the price point during development, there would be 50,000 on the street now,not the 11 or so thousand we have.
That $5000 thrown on top at the last minute killed the car! IMHO
The rebate prices now are what a second year buyer could have negotiated from $30k.

"What kind of car is that?"
"It's a 2003 Mercury Marauder."
"Oohh... I've never even heard of that."

i just bought an 04 in silver with all 4 options and paid invoice(34,000)-500.00 +rebates of 5000 for for a total of 5500 in rebates 28500. way below cars direct target price.the dealer had this car for 5 months and noone wanted it i guess. i looked at it 3 months ago and test drove it. he kept calling me to buy it. the car is well worth it but the public is brainwashed into buying foreign and paying much more and getting much less. i also used my sons college degree from last year for another $400. college grad rebate!! this car has got to be the best value out there.

At that time they had 10 Marauders in stock. Three and a half months later they still have 5 Marauders left. Go figure!
Please see my other forum memo entitled "The most appealing cars sometimes sell poorly".
I did a little survey today of 15 Lincoln-Mercury dealers in the Chicagoland area (not absolutely all the possible dealers here), and here's what's in stock here.
15 dealers have 46 Marauders (2004) in stock. This is 28 Black, 13 Silver Birch, and 5 Dark Toreador Red. Three of the dealers had no stock, 5 had 1 car each, 2 had 4 cars, 1 had 5 cars, 1 had 6 cars, 1 had 7 cars, and 1 had 14 cars! There definitely are brand new Marauders still available in dealer inventory. Considering that production ended on June 25th, 2004, these dealers have had these cars 2-1/2 months at least. Some may be older, as with my dealer. Ford should be offering some newer, even more lucrative rebates to try to help the dealers move out the last of the 2004's!

Yeah Teamrope, and the fact that most dealerships don't even know what it is.
"Ya here to pick up your Grand Marquis?" is what I was asked the day I came to pick up my car.

I know what you mean. I had to bite my tounge when we got the oil changed in KC on the way back from Indy... They wrote up the service ticket as a Grand Marquis! :fire: They had a DTR on the lot too.

Yeh! The advertising blitz ...that's what did it.
BTW, Barb took her Aviator in for service, and came home with a handfull of those folded up 03 Marauder posters. Y'know, the B&W drag strip ones?

Although the dealership where I get my MM serviced is great, they also call me with "your Grand Marquis is ready "message.
Also these cars listed in Canda at over $48,000.00!
And the deals / rebates up here were less than was offered stateside .
But after almost a year of ownership , I am still knocked out by this car and I have not even begun to grow tired of it .
In fact I like it more now than when I bought it... and I really liked it then!
