View Full Version : New England Foliage Meet
I know that there is a plan for a foliage trip in PA but I had already been thinknig about doing one up here and I figured some of us don't want to travel to PA.
Besides, our peak week is usually earlier than thiers.
I am thinking about a CT/MA route. Western MA and central CT offer some great foliage views.
If I can see that we have good interest for this from the New England Marauders I will go to work on planning out a "drivers" route which will include an assortment of roads that will be good for sightseeing, driving the twisties and some highway cruising.
I will also set up a few stops where we can get out of our car, stretch our legs a bit and do a little walking around.
Naturally, there will be good places to eat. I could line up breakfast, lunch and dinner or we could just do lunch an dinner.
I will put my thoughts on the route next.

My thoughts on the route are...
We meet in the Hartford area. If we are early enough I'll take you all to my favorite diner which is 10 minutes away. From there we take our highway time for about a half hour into Southbury, CT and from there we have a really nice road that takes us up into New Milford, CT. New Milford has a really nice green that is very scenic. That can be our first stop or we can roll on.
After that, we can hit Rt. 7 north. Rt. 7 north is a totally awesome road. Smooth pavement, nice corners and more. North about 7 miles is the Bulls Bridge, one of the last remaining covered bridges in the US. This, again, is a nice area to take photos and do a bit of walking around.
Back on 7 north again to Kent, CT. If the timing works out we can stop for lunch or, we can make a quick stop to Kent Falls. This is once of the most scenic waterfalls you will see.
After that we will do some motoring north up into Adams, MA where I know some back roads in the Florida, MA area that take us through state fores and provide us with some breathtaking views.
Next stop, The Summit. This is a place where you can see for miles, and miles, and miles.
Next, we run route 2 out east and then 91 south to North Hampton, MA which is not only a great little town but also the home to one of my favorite restaurants where we can eat mexican, drink Coronas and wrap up a great day in New England.
Our peak week is typically the 2nd or 3rd weekend in Oct. It will be hard to call until a bit later in Septbember but the date will be called based on the foliage peak.

That sounds cool. Route 7 is a nice drive like Dan has stated. But I would first need to know what week is best before I can say if I can make it or not. BTW, Saturdays are better for me, but if Saturdays aren't good for you guys, then please bring that to light.
The reaction to this is good, so far. :)
I woud be planning a Saturday thing. We will have to watch the news to pick the right one. As I said earlier, the 2nd or 3rd week of Oct is normally peak.
Right now, anyone who would consider this should post here. I would want to pre run the route just to seek out any other cool stops along that way should the need to "adjust on the fly" arises.

WE ARE A GO!!!
WHO: Any Marauder owner who RSVP's via email.
WHAT: A Marauder foliage trip
WHY: You're kidding, right?
WHERE: CT and Western, MA.
WHEN: OCTOBER 17th, 2004. Starting at 8:00 AM in New Britain, CT.
The route for this trip has already been partially described in this thread. Odds are, we will put a decent amount of miles on our cars that day.
It is predicted by forecasters that the 16-17 weekend will be the peak weekend for the area.
HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
If you want to attend EMAIL Mike Tibbetts at michael.tibbetts@nypro.com and let him know. There is an RSVP cut off. That day is Friday, October 15, 12:00 PM.
The final details such as the exact location of the meeting point, our departure time, and so on will be delievered via email by the end of the day Friday.
The reason for the RSVP is to have an accurate head count for the breakfast location and other preparations.
It is funny. If we only get three or four cars it will make for the kind of fun that can only come when we run in a small pack. On the other hand, if we get a lot of folks it will make for the kind of fun that can only come when you're hanging with a bunch of folks with similar interest. Kind of cool, huh?
One last thing. There may be a time or two where we might be travelling at what could be considered a "brisk" pace. Nothing dangerous but occasionally frisky. :) If you belong to the speed limit club you won't enjoy this tour and should stay home. :)
Mike and I both look forward to your RSVP's. It will be a most enjoyable day.

Oh, well how ya doin' Mike, amd pleased to "meet" you(so to speak). I'm in as long as we can get atleast a few more people. I mean half a dozen would be nice. What about frank (aka "Ultravorx")??? And if 8:00 am is an hour or two too early for anyone who might want to come from NY to join us, then I sure wouldn't complain about making it at 9:00 or even 10:00 am since I'm a night owl. I mean I'll get up at 6:30 am to meet you guys if I have to, but if you expect people from NY to come, then they will have to be hauling themselves out of bed at 5 or 5:30am after a Saturday night. Especially if they want to wash their car before coming out w/us. Not to mention they would have to wash their car in the dark at that hour. :rolleyes:
And besides that, what are you married guys gonna be served w/divorce papers if you don't make it back home by lunch time? I mean how long are you planning on this thing to last? The way I was thinking, we should be putting in about 4 hours of driving, and couple that with a couple hours for hangin' out or whatever, and so a total of 6 or 7 hours should do it. Right? That would easily get us all back home in time for supper at 6:00PM even if we started out by 10:00am. Which would be perfect IMO. And that would also give people who might be traveling a little further to drag themselves out of bed, wash their cars, and travel to meet us. Also it isn't uncommon for me to get home at 1:00 am Sunday morning. Maybe you married guys might remember that when you were single??? :D

As far as the time schedule goes, I'm afraid you'll have to take that up with Dan. It's his thing. I'm just collecting emails (trying anyway) so I can let everyone know the final schedule.

p.s. I'll be running winter tires though because of "center balding" on the rears, inner wear on the fronts, and a rear tire that keeps getting flats (10 patches to date). I decided i'll run winter tires till spring when i'll buy new shoes!

If we get just one person from NY who wants to go and who says the time is too early I will change it. Otherwise, there is a lot of ground to cover and an early start gives us the chance to put some miles down, make a few stops and not feel rushed.

Part of the route has a view that is well over 60 miles. I have selected roads that are DRIVERS ROADS, to say the least. This event will be one that will cover it all from great driving to great views to historic locations to visit.

OK all,
Dan emailed me the route and the plans for the day and he is right, it is going to be a great time. He did a great job of fitting in a lot of stuff and left plenty of room so we won't be pressured or rushed. I will email the trip schedule to everyone who RSVPs to me (michael.tibbetts@nypro.com) by noon today.
Also, with your RSVP, could you give me a headcount so that we can make arrangements with the eateries.

You did a great job of choosing a route which combined the best opportunities for taking in some great scenery and letting our MM's loose on a plethora of straights and twisties. My kids will be talking about knocking down the "Baby Buckets" for a quite a while.
I think the best parts about yesterday were meeting you and Larry, and even though there were only three of us, watching peoples heads turn as we went by.
I think the only thing that could have made it better would have been more MMs.
I very much look forward to any future events.
Like maybe this spring?

That route is one of my personal favorites. I began running it as young as 19 years old. It doesn't matter what type of car you have there is something there.
You should tell the group about the old indian road and our quick blast up it. :) That was like launching from the inside of a space craft.
Your kids were and are great. They all behaved very nicely. They are lucky to have a father who is not afriad to matt it every now and then.
We don't have to wait for spring, you know? There is still the Pike. We could do that once in the month of November if you guys want. A nice part of the Pike is that it doesn't always have to involve cruising. There is one place in particular where the domestic cars hang out and talk for hours.

My wife and I had a great time and we agree with Mike, Dan did a great job.
This is the first time I've gotten my foot into it on a road course and I'm more impressed with the car now than I was. Again great time and look forward to more events :D
