View Full Version : Done Racing for the Year
Went to Route 66 today, huge turnout.
Probably close to 500 cars racing, another 100 in the car show along with a huge array of Kushman vintage motorcycles.
1st pass was 11.852 @ 115.13mph w/1.656 60ft
2nd pass was 11.937 @ 114.46 w/1.690 60ft
An official came up to me after the 2nd pass and politely told me I was not allowed to race anymore unless a roll cage is installed.
Well im not gonna chop up my car, so Im now limited to another track nearby that does not adhere to NHRA rules. Unfortunately, the track is not in very good condition.
Its been a fun season and now I have a the timeslip Ive been working so hard for.
Time for a beer.

Wow that's awesome Zack. Congratulations!!
Isn't there another member on the site into the 11's who runs without a cage? Where does he race? Maybe you could go there?

Does a roll cage have to chop-up a car?
Make it your next project:) Don't stop now :argh:

It's good to see another MM. in the 11's !!!!
You have earned that beer, it would be great if you and Lidio could make the Heavyweight Shootout in Atlanta, 11 second Marauders are quite rare.
Congratulations on your fine achievement.

great work Zack!
most people don't even realize you did all the mods yourself! ANYONE can get an 11 or 12 second MM with the help of professional mechanics and several thousand dollars, but you did it yourself. This is something to be truly proud of. Not that there is anything wrong with having others do the work.
I bet you will have a roll cage installed before Spring, probably before the end of the year. You got the itch and that roll cage is the only thing preventing you from scratching it.
Incidently, were you running with the special grille? I knew that thing would add a few ponies!

Actually, won't a rollcage slow you down? The added weight of all that metal has got to be heavy. Then you won't be under 12 seconds and won't need it anymore, technically. That would suck. :dunno:
WOW! Nice times...was that straight motor or with some juice? These cars love the colder air!!!

Congratulations! Try to find an IHRA sanctioned track, they'll let you run 11.49 w/o a cage instead of NHRA's 11.99. I looked over the NHRA rules (a link at SSHS4.com) and I believe you can get by with a roll bar instead of a cage since you have stock floor, frame, etc. Might be a little less obtrusive to put in a bar than a cage.

Brian: Based on my research, you are correct. The trick appears in not altering the floor pan, the stock frame, etc., to be able to get by with just a roll bar (as opposed to a full cage).
I got the NHRA Rule Book to read through and this is the conclusion I came up with. I went with the full cage though just in case I get the car into the 9's. At this rate though, it appears that Zack is going to beat me there though.

Zack, don't hang up the driving gloves yet, If they have the Merc's against the Impala's this year @ Byron again. Were gonna need the Windy City's own Team Mac & Zack show ..... 281 cubic inches of pressurized.. asphalt ripping .. all the fun one can have on a Fall day. Two of the Best 4 door cars ever to come out of Detroit. fighting it out on a Drag strip built in a corn field..in the Midwest... Kinda like the Field Of Dreams thing !!!! only played with PISTONS & POSITRACTION.

wow - sub 12 that's almost as fast as my Suburban :bs: Great times I just hope I can get into the 12s. I took my 442 to Ginerman this summer and they just changed the rules on that this year too, any open car needs a roll bar. Though they just changed it again so that modern cars without roll bars can race as they are made safer to begin with.

You sir have one sweet Vortech powered Marauder. With all the work that you've done to get her where she's at now, you deserve to sit back and enjoy the view for awhile. We know you'll be back into the game chasing for more soon enough.

Drag racing is by far the coolest hobby I've taken up in the past 10 years. I get a head rush EACH AND EVERY time I line up at the tree.
Plus just watching the old school big blocks doing wheelstands, and the whiiiiine of those Fox body turbo mustangs give me goosebumps!! I go to the dragstrip twice a week, every single week. Our local drag strip here closes out with a bang on Oct 29th. Freaky Friday! Gates open at 9, and there is non-stop drag racing from 10PM to 7AM!!!!!
Zack, great times. That's one hell of a 'Rauder you've got. Wish I had the money. Until then, I will live my dreams through the likes of you, BillyG, Lidio, and the rest of the blown 4.6 guys.. :woohoo:

Zack, that's an awesome ET, congratulations. I got to thinking about a roll cage and came up with an idea. We all know it's unnecssary BS, so why not make a faux cage? Make it out of schedule 40 PVC and cover it with that foam padding stuff. You could snap it together & go to the strip, then just take it apart when you're done. :hmmm:

Do you have any more information (link) to this event? I went there two years ago and had great fun.
Please post or start a new thread with more info, dates, and location.
Well it seems I wasnt done racing for the year afterall.
I was at US 41 today for the Midwest SVT Challenge, Cobras everywhere! A good group of people on top of that.
I had nothing but a good day, heres the results:
Best pass of the day:
11.627 @ 116.88mph! 60 foot was 1.608!
Other passes:
12.221 @ 116.34mph (I was the very first car down the track!) Very slick!
11.807 @ 116.57mph
11.975 @ 115.98mph
11.774 @ 116.88mph
Awesome day, very windy but temps in the mid 40's
You should have seen the attention the car got, the Marauder impresses yet again.

Zack, great numbers for your sled, I concur with bigdog, slap a cage in it and keep going, besides if you spray the motor with lets say, 150hp you'd be tickling the tens, then all ya gotta do is buy mandated axles, tranny blanket, balancer, hmmm, maybe just stay in the 11's afterall.
Quck question, any reason you cut your own springs rather than purchase the eibach springs, other than cost? Do you think they have the same ride quality on the street?

Nice to see these cars break into the 11's with no juice. Your car in the 11's and Lidio's car ran in the 11's also without NOS. This just shows what these cars can do with the proper tuning.

The people who seem to be having problems with the Eibachs are supercharged. Or so it seems.
So,.. they might work for ya,... until you start bolting on power adders. :burnout:

I posted a query a few weeks back, "how much does supercharging add to the weight of the vehicle"?
I believe it's around 200 pounds in centrifugal trim. With that much weight added to the front of the car and well before the front suspension's center line, I would guess that supercharging will extract a response from the front suspension. It may be an unplesant response, depending on your expectations.
It is roughly 80-90 pounds Mac, but it is not equally distributed from side to side. The slightly heavier side is the passenger's.

Hmmm, I think that's an interesting point both you and MAC habe brought up. I've never thought about that. If using the shipping weight is an accurate method to determine the actual weight of a S/Cer kit, then the Trilogy kit weighs about 140 LBS. I remember that the Trilogy kit came to my house in two seperate boxes. One weighed exactly 97 LBS, and the other which had the S/cer unit itself weighed 43 LBS.
So going by your "80-90lb" figure Zack, then I guess that the centrifugal S/Cer is lighter than the roots type S/Cer is. However, since the roots type S/Cer sits directly in the center of the engine, then it also doesn't place more weight on the passenger side, but distributes it evenly. Ofcourse both types of S/Cers are placing the extra weight in the front of the car. Just an observation....

Wow, Zack! Congrats on those numbers
It looks like you've zeroed in on a superb setup. So much for the small cube motor needing a positive displacement blower, eh? ;)
That's an awesome 60'. What gears, converter, and tires are you running? Still stock motor internals?
You guys are certainly getting the respect from the Bowtie crowd now with performers like this
