I am beginning to shop motorcycles to complement my MM (a mid-life event... some of you know the drill, the rest will discover later). Anyone with or without a bike interested in swapping information/tips about a good one to own (including other forums for this discussion). I am talking 750cc - 1800cc cruiser, new or used. Thanks for the responses. Hey, I might even buy your bike! Thanks for the feedback.

Honda Shadow is a good one to start out with. Take the MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) rider course, then the ERC (experienced rider course) after a few months.

I can relate, in addition to many friends, and my natural father (many many years ago), I lost my Dad on his Valkyrie last year. But I still ride occasionally. It gets in your blood and becomes a part of who you are.

Besides, I've heard several friends over the years who spent their lives as spectators say "I wish I had done this or that". If you're not living life to the fullest, you're just waiting around to die.

If you're here then you understand Marauders. If you understand Marauders then you understand panache and being stylisticly profound in the face of the mundaneness of the universe. So, two words you will understand which will answer your question: Moto Guzzi.

We bought a pair of Yamaha V-Star 1100 Classic's to ride in perfect weather and daytime only. They go for ~ $7K and are smooth and reasonably quiet, as well as very reliable. Have fun, ride safe.

Oops, sorry, Charlie, I forgot to mention those as part of the fleet, ...and the Yamaha 660 Grizzlys.

I have a Honda Shadow (1100). Dark Red - matches my new MM.

Believe it or not - I bought it new in 1988 and keep it mainly covered and garaged - only takng it out for an occasional Sunday ride. I'm on the third set of rubber (age not miles). Only 6,000 miles on it - the annual visit to the dealer for routine stuff confirms that they really haven't changed much in all this time. I suppose cost per mile has been extreme.

Not a bike I'd like to sit on for an eight hour stretch, but overall, it's never let me down, and have no plans to let it go.

The Shadow may be a bike for you.

Thanks for the reply. Incredible appearance, a real beauty, more than I dreamed of...! I'm afraid a Harley this nice is out of my price range (now), but if you ever need a "babysitter" for her, keep me in mind. I'm just just around the "corner" from ya'. Thanks and happy trails!

Depends on what you're looking for. The 1100 Vstar's are a great ride but air cooled. The Honda 1300 VTX's are water cooled but run about $1200-1500 more. If your looking for exhaust roar, get a Harley or plan on aftermarket pipes for the Yamaha or Honda. (The VTX sounds like my sons minibike.)
Enjoy.

well if anyone is interested in my bike I have it for consginment sale at a local shop. they told me if i found someone to buy it you can finance through them for $13k. I'll take 12.5 cash. I think it is worth more considering I work at a dealer and see the kinds of used bikes they sell for thousands more. I want to sell it so I can get a MM. Sadly I cant have both.

It has 24,500 miles (avg mi for this year) I have 3 different seats for it. corbin solo seat, corbin touring 2up seat, and stock seat, also comes with removeable black sissy bar/Backrest, and luggage rack. I also have stock chrome drag bars if you want to change out the handlebars. (you would have to get new cables and front brake line)

PM if ur interested.

If you're wanting to complement your Marauder car, then you'd have to check out one of these:

and here's one on ebay:

To complement your MM - nothing says bike like a Harley! :pirate:
Would suggest a softtail deuce - black w/ a lot of extra chrome.
Take the safety class first!!!!

Happy Trails

Honda VTX1300 is a really solid bike. Magazines like it over the 1800. All of the Japanese manufacturers make good solid V-twin cruisers. There no true dogs in the bunch. Go to a dealer who carries all four brands and compare.

there are some good jap bikes out there i guess... but harleys hold their value like crazy. I think if i really wanted to put the effort into it i could sell mine for close to what i paid for it 4 years ago. I know if i trade it in it will be sold for that or more. That is why i am trying to sell it privately because I refuse to trade it in at the mercury place for lets say 10k because they will just sell it to where i work for 10.5. HD sells it for i dunno 15 or more. I dont want the merc bad enough to be taken to the cleaners on my trade.

I was happy to get get payoff on my last jap bike after trying to sell it for like 2 months and it had a bunch of accesories that i added after buying it.

:soap: jap bikes are disposable. how many people you know that have an old restored jap bike vs people that have old harleys? :soap:

This is the only bike to complement the MM

The VRSCB model starts with the idea that with 115 horses running directly beneath your saddle, you don’t need much more. So we left the muscle intact and turned the brightness down. You get the same genetics that make a V-Rod® a V-Rod. Aluminum body. 49mm 38° raked fork. 180mm rear tire. The effect of all the shine getting stripped down is an even more raw, aggressive nature. Black calipers. Black brake lines. Black hand controls. Black rear shock springs. And an all-black hydro-formed frame. For 2005, there are five colors and a new, brighter reflector optics headlight to offset all the blackness. The liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 60° V-Twin Revolution® engine with EFI delivers all those stampeding horses. So as the style goes minimalist, the off-the-line power most definitely does not.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and bought a bike.. . a 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit VT1100. Drove about 7 different bikes in the process, including the Harley V-Rod and Road King, and Honda Valkyrie (sorry, the Moto Guzzi and Harley's are outta my league . . and pocketbook size). Thanks for the feedback and ideas, guys. Next project is to upgrade those . . . . . floor mats, maybe a supercharger too, mmm . . .

I have to agree... too many people die in cars with all the steel around them..... much easier to die or be seriously injured on a bike.......... especially with all the moron drivers out there.......

Hi , I went thru the same deal....I bought a 2005 1400cc Susuki Bouelvard.
They used to call them VS1400 Intruders. Its shaft drive, Hydro valves so
less maintenence.... Mine is silver (or grey) I took all the emblems off
it and looks alot better without them. I got mine with leather jacket and
helmet for 10,000 out the door with Susuki's creative financing.

Thanks for the responses. Hey, I might even buy your bike! Thanks for the feedback. The todays motorcycle are more narrowed in their respective mission than a couple decades back. (Cruiser, power cruiser, sport bike, racing bike etc.)
A few years ago, i went to fulfill a teen's dream and bought a Desmo Ducati 748 bike: It was a racing bike in disguise. I had grown older and the Ducati was still a terribly uncomfortable animal .So much for my dream: I had to ride at over 100 mph all the time to avoid spinal, arm and butt ache !! You just couldn't ride in town because you were so lean on, you couldn't see the traffic lights! But that thing is still giving me chivers just to think about it. Handcrafted by hand with pride in Italy by a bunch of dedicated masters of their trade. I almost got killed a couple time but that machine was still asking for more beating. What a journey.

My advice: Get a good year's book and think a lot about how and when you're going to ride and then, make your choice on a given kind and model and shop around. Midlife event can also be deceptive if not thought enough.
Good luck !!

I actually did the opposite, I bought the Marauder to complement my bike. There's nothing like having a hopped up HD Fatboy that has a little attitude and get up and go. At the sametime, you can ride in comfort for most of the afternoon.

If you want a cruiser (V twin) I would stick with the Japanese bikes. Solid, reliable bikes. Stay away from anything under 1000 to 1100 ccs. The 800s are sluggish and not as smooth. Harleys just shake to much and are OVER PRICED, even the used. It is an odd cult that is facinated with old technology.
I have had Suzukis, Kawasakis and Hondas and have had trouble free bikes. Currently I ride a 2005 Gold Wing. Give some thought as to what you want the bike for. Touring, trans to work, weekends etc.. How much will you ride? Then look for a reputable dealer. There are BAD dealers out there that can make owning a good bike a nightmare. Ask around to riders you know or meet. Bikes are great fun and make you a better driver in your MM. Watch out for the cars, they are the problem.

The V-rod is fast and good looking. It doesn't have the full respect of Harley owners as of yet but that is coming. It's only problem is in the corners on a tight turn road. It doesn't have the clearance necessary. But in the straightaway, look out....especially with "enhancements" (we all know about those, don't we?)

Rob1559

Hmmmm...

Fast and Harley in the same sentence? Oxymoron :)
I used to ride a modded ZRX1100 that went like stink. It probably could run mid 10s easily in the quarter. I went with the Gold Wing last fall because I like to ride long distances without being beat up by the wind. I guess I am getting old.
