Hi all -

I want to pass along what's been going on at our school this week.

We buried two of our students yesterday.

Two students, a brother and a sister ages 18 and 14, were killed Monday morning on their way to school in a 2 vehicle accident.

They were driving a '94 Pontiac Grand Am on a gravel country road 1/2 mile from their house, and the older brother (driving) flew through a stop sign at the intersection of two country roads. They were hit broadside by an F-550 truck at about 45 MPH and died at the scene. The driver and passenger of the truck, even though both vehicles rolled into the ditch, were unhurt.

This is a gravel road that never saw any traffic on any other day, as there was nothing down the road the truck was coming from, so it was a bad habit that many people have around here that killed these two students (many teachers and students say they also do not stop at rural stop signs because there is never any traffic)

The funeral was yesterday, and approximately 1200 people were there. The town is only approx. 2500 people.

I just want everyone to be reminded to drive safely. I was taught that it's your job as a safe driver to always assume there is someone else, another car there, or another pedestrian to look for. It is why I always drive in a model fashion around school, and take the cracks from the kids about having a fast car that "never goes above 30 MPH." I myself am guilty of speeding in other areas and making these types of assumptions, as we all are from time to time. This causes me to reevaulate my own driving habits, especially now that I have a child of my own.

I have seen students killed now 4 times since I've been a teacher, (I have only taught 12 years) and it never gets easier.

Here is hoping that all of you drive safe and stay safe. Use the track if you want to race.

Thanks,
-A

Very sad news indeed. My condolences.

There has been a real rash of student deaths around here in the Washington Metro area. Fourteen (14) in the past two weeks. Many have been racing and speed related. Very unfortunate.

Sorry to hear that Andrew.

My thoughts and prayers are with your community.

I handled a suicide last week. 17 year old high school senior shot herself. Very sad time for her community also.

We had a miracle up here.

A 17 yearold high school student went over a STEEP 150 foot bank and was trapped in the wreckage for 8 days.
She survived!
