Interesting in that it appears the LS-1 has similar RHP as our MM's.

Two recent examples;
1) HP TV Dyno Jet an LS-1 in a Camaro with bolt ons and got 286RHP vs my MM of 276RHp with similar bolt ons
2) a Member here Dyno Jet his MM (I believe with only Chip/Denso/UD ) and his C-5 Corvette and both got very similar RHP numbers.

I know the LS-1 generates more torque than the 4.6L DOHC.

I was surprised the RHP numbers were that close, any comments from our Bow Tie guys?

sailsmen,
Numbers may appear similar, but remember the Vette weighs almost 1000 (half a ton) less than an MM. Realize how much room there is for expanding the base nbrs of a Vette (345 ci) with 65 more Cu Inches more than the MMs (281ci) -- heads, cam, exhaust, and rest of breathing.
My Vette Dynoed at about 280 HP and and 285 TQ. It needs some tuning to lean out the rich condition almost from a start and at all RPMs.
The Red MM dynoed at about 255 HP and 265TQ. Must be the factory revised tuning with dual knock sensors.
The Blue MM dynoed at Indy this year about 240 HP and 250TQ. Blue needs tuning above 4000RPMs -- runs too rich.

286 hp is on the low side for an LS1.
Most 6 spds dyno 300 hp or more at the wheels bone stock.
Even with an auto, bolt-on mods should easily take it over 300 rwhp.

Agreed, 286RWHP is on the low side for a C5 LS1. I have personally seen a few bone stock C5s and f-bodies dyno at close to 300RWHP.

My LS6 powered Z06 dynoed at 350RWHP with just a cold air kit. Now with headers and a dyno tune I am at 370RWHP.

With ported/polished heads and a new cam I could get 425RWHP. The same mods could be done to an LS1 for comparable numbers. I don't see any naturally aspirated 4.6L touching this.

My '98 WS6 is one of the "slow" LS1s (they got stronger each year since their introduction) and it pulls 310 rwhp (on several different dynos, so I know it's not a one-shot deal), so my first instinct is to say something was off on those LS1s.

However, one important item is that hp is a product of torque and RPM. High RPM with lower torque can generate the same peak hp number as another motor with high torque at a much lower RPM range.

Another thing to consider is the width of the torque curve and how flat it remains and for how long... in my case the torque stayed above 300 lb-ft at the rear wheels from somewhere under 2000 RPM until just past 5400 RPM or so, enough to give me that 310 rwhp peak. I would be very interested in knowing what were the peak torque numbers and at what RPM those rwhp peaks came about, in the examples that were provided.

This is a good example to illustrate (as has been mentioned by others here previously) how the peak hp numbers by themselves do not represent an accurate picture of what's going on.

Thanks for the replies. Since I race at the track I am well ware of the weight differences.

My point being the 4.6 DOHC is a more powerful engine than it's reputation. :D
