Well, it all started when i got back from overseas and got to see my MM for the first time in six months. As a few of us know the car was repaired after haveing part of the nose removed in an accident. Ok, there was something about the car that I just couldnt figure out. I liked one side of the front more than the other but I couldn't figure out why...
Today I found out what was wrong. It seems that when they repaired my Merk they only had to replace the drivers side turn signal lens and not the houseing. The houseing was installed and they painted all the crome on the inside around the lights "Gloss Black" It dosn't seem to effect the performance of the lights at all and it kinda looks betterin a way... just a little more sinister on the drivers side now:coolman: . So possibly I might have to thank them for the mistake. I have no picks yet but I was thinking of haveing the passenger side done. Duh, both sides have to match right?? Just think about everything blacked out in the turn signal and cornering pods. See what you all think.

yeah, the problem is just with the turn signal pods. i cant figure out if i want them to fix it or make the same mistake on the other side:rolleyes:

I see what you mean. They painted the reflector on the driver side turn signal assembly black, the passenger side still has the shiney reflective surface.
It's your call as to looks, but to me, it's a safety issue. There's a reason for the reflector, and painting it over gloss black has to reduce visibility of the lamp. My call is to have the assembly replaced by the body shop (their cost, too, because it was their mistake).

I'd be more concerned about the cornering light as I can't see how it can be performing as well. I like that light a lot. The turn signal seems to me to be fine. I'm like Gene Krantz to the Grumman rep. on the LEM engine during the Apollo 13 crisis, "as long as it lights".
All of it looks great on a black car though! :)
As for my sweet Quicksilver, not happening. She looks fine to me.

I like it....but it's still hard to see.
When you take your pics in the light, get close, and don't use a flash.
I am dying to know how they did this?

I am dying to know how they did this?Barry, look at the nite time pics again. These actually show the paint quite well.
In this shot of the passenger side, you see the flash bouncing off the reflector around the turn signal bulb. This is the OEM unpainted assembly

Here it is again.

Now here is the driver side, where the body shop painted the reflector black.

And this shot really shows it -

see how it's black all around the bulb with little or no reflected light from the flash?

belive it or not the reflection from the light is still good not much differnt at all. because of the high gloss with the black it still provides enough relection from the light.

I seriously doubt the body shop would've painted over what would have obviously been reflectors. I'm not sure, but I don't think the marker assembly even comes apart to be able to do it. At least I don't remember there being anyway to open it up like that back when I put my Silverstar marker bulbs in. Anybody know for sure?
More likely is that the assembly actually came that way out of the box. Different application? Defective part? I don't know.

I can't imagine how that lense got painted. :dunno:
Perhaps there IS a different part number out there.
I hope we find an answer, cause I am seriously liking that look.

ok, i went out and got a much better look at the light. it's not painted, just all black. the #s as far as i can tell are correct. im really starting to warm up to this light now and dont want to replace it. anyone got a clue on how to dismantle the other one? going to pm dealer also to see if he can help. i'll keep you all posted.

I hate to suggest this, but could it be that the repair facility used a dreaded *aftermarket* lens here? Some of the afermarket components such as lenses I've seen have unusual differences in their construction, especially lenses, ie. where some yellowish lenses are much more orange in color than OEM parts. Just an idea.

nope, it is a OEM light from mercury, even down to the waterfall. i've been looking around even at the "aftermarket" guys just to see if i can find anyone that makes them messed up. i did find one place that has them for something like $47 each and they say there "OEM lights". thats about cheap enough to get one and take it apart. i want another one of these lights. monday i'll take it back and see what the story is.

Wait a minute here....
Why not ask the repair facility where they acquired the part? Perhaps they, or the location they got it from may have more.
The one single light just couldn't be an anomaly, a one of a kind, abastard child......
