has anyone replaced the factory speakers? what size are they? 5x7/6x8 in the doors and deck? noticed any difference? which speakers did you use?
They are 5x7 in the rear deck. Any good speaker is going to blow the factory speakers away. Spending around $100/pr will get some really nice sound. I believe that the front doors also use the same size. A matched set of 4 would absolutely astound, in concert with the powered subwoofer.
No, I haven't done it to mine, since it's not my daily driver (it's hers).

I replaced all of mine except the sub, with Infinity Kappas, and the difference in sound is amazing. I highly suggest you change your speakers, and get XM it rocks.
Bill,
what size did you put in? I know for a fact that the rear deck speakers in my car measure 5x7", taken when checking for the Brian "field change order" on the sub.
I like the way that the rear deck speaker landing is angled ahead, instead of aiming them straight up at the glass. Cool touch!

Bill,
Do you notice that you have to raise the volume higher with the Kappas than the factory speakers? I was thinking about replacing the speakers but I wondered about this.

no... I think the volume is fine, the clarity of the Kappas is top notch.

6x9 is a good standard size. finding a 5x7, 5x8, or 6x8 is gonna be alot harder. Cruthfiled is a good place to find some knowledge but thier prices are higher then you can find elsewere.
crutchfield says they are 6x8 all the way around :(. not good for audiophiles. you'd have to do a little work to jam in 6x9s(or 5x7).
if you guys really care about the sound then replace everything. head unit, wiring, amps, speakers, subs, etc.. stock systems are all crap but just upgrading will be good just as mtnh said.
note: under powering a speaker is more dangerous then overpowering it!
ps: a near 7 inch sub? bah! get a 10 or a 12 (or a pair of them ;))...infinity perfect 12.1s have , imho, the best price/quality ratio of any sub out there.
carry on!

anyone think those Sony Headunits (perhaps LCD Screen) type things are good for the MM?

FACT: factory sub is 6.75" round. rear speakers are 6x8 and fronts are 6x8. i changed mine today. got kenwood kfc 6808c 3 way 6x8s for both the front and rear. rear grills pop off and 4 screws hold each speaker to the metal shelf. INTERESTING NOTE: YOU CAN SLIDE YOUR FINGERS UNDER THE CARPETED SHELF FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE OPENING AFTER YOU REMOVE THE GRILL AND CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR FOAM WAS LEFT IN ABOVE THE 6.75" SUB SPEAKER. yes mine was there. i was able to ease my long fingers in and grab it out. it was 1" thick and about 6" x 6". made a huge difference in bass output. let me say it again, made a huge difference in bass output. the kenwoods are crystal clear (separate woofer, midrange and tweeter). the door have 2 visible screws on bottom, 1 visible screw on outside edge, 1 hidden torx behind the cover where the door handle opener is, 1 hidden screw inside - below the window covers, pull the side mirror triangle piece out (held on with clip), pull door cover UP, not out, until it is free. when replacing front speaker and reusing the oem socket screws, cut the screws down half way (via dremmel) or use a spacer as the oem have the grills glue on them and screws are to long and bottom out before the new speaker is secured. GOOD LUCK!! a world of difference. never knew it would sound this GOOD!

Personally I like the factory radio, but have you seen these from Pioneer?

stanleyk, I used the kenwood kfc-6808c instead of the kenwood excelon for several reasons: 1) the regular kenwood has poly cones (mica filled plastic) versus the excelon's treated fiber pulp paper cones . i believe the plastic are better in a harsh environment of doors and water. 2) 3 way with separate mid and tweeter versus the 2 way excelon's sepate tweeter for greater detail. 3) price $69 each pair versus $139 each pair - saving $140 for both pairs.

hey guys, I almost bought some nice JL audio speakers, they were 5x7 yet they fit a 6x8 as well, but then i wondered if the speaker itself was any smaller than say the kenwood excelon 6x8 speaker. maybe the only difference is that it fits in either dimension mount, but heck, no sense paying more if the speaker itself is any smaller than what would normally be called a 6x8? sorry, but I'm looking online for this stuff, and when I go to BEst By or other audio store, they either have all 5x7 or all 6x8 so I'm not sure if the speaker itself is any bigger or smaller between the two????

dare:
In our situation, the difference between the 2 speaker sizes is not relevent...what's more important is the design, quality of construction, size of magnet, the material the cone is made of, the material the surround is made of, etc (not in any particular order)...a high quality 5x7 will sound better than a mediocre 6x8...and price is not necessarily a good indicator of quality...as jo-alphabet said, he likes his Kenwood 6808s better than the more expensive Excelons...
