View Full Version : Leave O/D off?

Hey guys,
I've read here that it's best for your tranny to turn off O/D before punching it with a Supercharger.
Is there any reason why you can't just leave the O/D off all the time when tooling around town, (90% of the time for me) and then just turn it on when jumping on the freeway? That way I wouldn't forget to turn it off when Ricer pulls up next to me. Does this cause any damage or extra wear and tear to the tranny? Does anyone else do this?

i leave my o/d off around town. if i hit sustained speeds over 40, i'll put it in o/d. the chip lidio burns for the trilogy kit keeps it out of o/d until 40mph and torque-converter lockup occurs just over 60mph. hope this helps...:)

Ummm... sort of. Just curious... Oh, wait a minute... I see. You're Trilogized, but don't have Lidio's chip?

Wait, wouldn't you have to have Lidio's chip? Doesn't he burn all of them? I'm just curious why you would leave o/d off till 40mph when Lidio's chip does this for you??
Thanks

Chuck, (Tallboy), be sure to leave it off on the 20th of this month...

i have lidio's chip that came with the kit. i leave the o/d off out of habit [and, what some may call a slight "control freak" issue]. yes, lidio's chip will send it to o/d at 40mph, but in stop and go traffic i leave it off. bootlegger-o/d won't get much use on the 20th, but the rear tires should get quite a work-out. i hope i have enough tread left to get back to fort myers so carfixer can replace 'em!!:burnout:

Yes you can leave the OD off whenever you please.
I have turned it off on the highway to burn fuel before a race. It takes me 15 minutes to burn a 1/4 tank on the highway in preparation to fuel up with 100 or better.

Cool! Thanks Marauder S/C #5! (I'll be glad when I learn all of your first names... lol!)

Dave.
The reason not to would strictly have to do with fuel economy and always running your engine at higher RPMs. The reason to be out of O/D in a supercharged car has to do with the tranny susceptibility to failure as a result of high HP downshifts out of OD to third.
I have gotten into the habit of treating my OD like a gear. I am routinely shifting into and out of it so often that it has become as reflexive as moving my foot to the brake when coming to a stop sign. This is in spite of the fact that I am not supercharged.
I suspect that if you just begin thinking about modifying your driving style to have OD off when you are in it or about to go in it and to have OD on when you are just crusing it will be less than a week before it is all second nature to you.
I hope this helps. It was a very good question.

Thanks Dan! Man, that was great information! (Why do I feel like John Belushi right now... with the exclamation points after sentences as if speaking to someone the way he did in the movie "The Blues Brothers", if you can imagine Jake saying, "Thanks Dan! Man, that was great information!".. LOL! Ok, I'm a nut!
Seriously, your's was just the kind of feedback I was hoping for. So far I have found that every thought and concern of mine regarding my MM has been addressed, and already considered by another member of this site. I love this! Thanks you guys for "helping a brother out". lol.
Dan, thanks for the info. Again, with what I needed.... :)

No, it's true, Joe's right. I saw Barry burning stuff, at Hagerstown. He was so good at it, they gave him a trophy.;)

I leave the OD off unless I am cruzin over 55. If I am in pursuit mode, I leave it off, Period. I dont care how fast I go. You have quicker response to the power when you mash the gas, and when you have to throw out the anchor, the car starts to slow as soon as you get off the gas.
To support this, I can tell you that my company car has over 57K and never had any break downs. This is not true with other P/O's who dont pay the same attention to how a car operates. They are the ones whos car breaks down and curses the builder. Then, I have to hear about how great the 95 Impala was.

I was with Barry the night before when he caused a Ricer to stall due to all the smoke from the burning tires. :burn:

Great info Defyant! That eases my worries about full-time "under-driving"! :)

Thanks Marauder8! Well, it seems unanimous. O/D turned off is ok, but expect less gas mileage per tank... (Duh!) lol.
Thanks!

I keep the OD OFF except when highway driving over 60 mph.
I am averaging a little more than 20 mpg in mixed driving...
The best mileage I got was a round trip journey from Yonkers, NY to Harrisburg, PA.
I yielded 27mpg cruising at an average 70mph...

I am glad that we have a LEO chime in. Tthe local PDin my town follows the same rule as a matter of policy. I suspect it is for the reasons stated here already. Odds are LEO mechanics have more knowledge about Panther cars than many. Odds are, if they are doing it most of us should be, too. At least in my opinion. :)
Thanks.
