View Full Version : Query for the Group: Membership Cards?

I just joined SVTOA and got a nice plastic credit-card-sized membership card. It made me wonder whether anyone here would be interested in these from the "Channel D" store. The card from SVTOA has embossed printing with a membership number and name, and some generic stuff on the front and back. Of course, for $40 to SVTOA you also get a magazine.

So, if there's enough interest, I might try to do these too. How much would you pay for one? What should it say (I'm thinking a logo on the front, with a member name and number embossed; maybe a "Charter Member" for people who buy one right away, or something for contributing members who've donated to the site, or your Regional affiliation) on the front? On the back? Should it have a photo (might make it expensive)? A slot to hand it from your pocket like a name badge?

Anyway - jump in and let me know before I spend any more time on this.

I have several of these plastic membership cards from other groups...USGA..NRA...etc.I couldn't find one if my life depended on it! What might be nice is a member sticker for the outside of the rear window or quarter windows, would be easy to spot other members.I've had a couple of exterior stickers from the Maine Sportsman and USGA on my truck for several years and they held up really well.

Is there an official MM org? I thought we were just a bunch of MM enthusiasts, guests in Logan's house, telling stories and sharing info. Some contribute to keep the lights on and some just mooch on Logan's generosity.

I'd be interested in both, a card & sticker for the car (something to stick / cling to the inside of the window).

Most of you know I did an extremely small production run of stickers about a year ago. This wasn't intended to infringe on Logan's MVII activities - I just did 'em to see how they'd turn out as stickers, and as magnets (basically a 3.5" sticker stuck to a magnetic backing - dresses up any refrigerator!). I couldn't get anyone interested in them, and basically gave most away (well, I think I kept most of the magnets). (Darrell: I gave one to Robert) My own opinion is that they are about 0.75" too big; other than that I like 'em.

Logan has done stickers which, by his own admission, don't wear very well over time. The ones I did seem fade-free (at least the one I've left on the patio to test for a year), are silver and black, and are about $5 per copy as stickers. It's the same logo that appears on the box on the home page of MM.Net.

I know Dave Popovich did "Motor City Marauders" stickers, and did one for me of the "Windy City Marauders" as a prototype. Now that I'm back in the country from traveling, I found a fax from another member who has volunteered to help me recreate the "WCM" sticker at a very reduced cost (Paul: I'll call you).

So, anyway, I'm not making any money at this venture, I'm just doing it because people seem to like logo stuff. If people want to indicate stickers please do so. Also -- PLEASE indicate how much you'd pay for a sticker, or for a membership card, so I can figure out whether I can afford to do this.

I dont mean to hijack your idea Mark, cause I like you and you're a hell of a guy.......

I put my mind on this subject a while back and thought that the last thing I needed was a plastic credit-card type MM card.

But I did come up with the MM Calling card - printed with a Get out of Jail Free card on one side and on the other side an 'advertisement' of this site with a place for the member to write their screen name. I theorized that all the people who got these could slip them under the wiper blades of other MM they see in order to 'spread the joy' of this site. Remember.... there were 14,000 MM's sold of these sold and only a coupla thousand people on this website. It would be really something to get the number of site users as a percent of MM's sold above 50%.

Anyway, the Crafypoke member cards were always free, and anyone who sends me a self-addressed stamped envelope will get plenty.

I remember having thousands of these at MMII and although I handed out a bucketfull of them, there were still plenty left over.

PM me with your mailing address and I will PM back to you the address you should use to send me a self-addressed stamped envelope.

If you are local to Chicago and come on out to a chicken Run - I usuall keep several hundred in my trunk.

So Mark, back to YOUR idea...... I guess I would want to know what I would use it for.

Hi Mark,

I am interested in window stickers & a magnet.

I have one of the large ones stickers from Logan but would like something a little smaller for the inside of car windows.

I guess I'd go $5.

Thanks

I would go with this idea only if this was part of a membership dues type of thing. You pay lets say $50, and get a card, sticker, and t-shirt. But thats only if we were more of a "real" club. With out that, I not too sure of the card thing.

Just curious, how would you get a picture on the card?

I agree with the BigDog --- under $10 bucks and a black and silver MM logo. A decal or sticker would be nice as well.

Maybe it's just because I'm isolated out here in the west, and not able to attend the regional meets you all have, but this seems much more like a bunch of friends hanging out and chatting on the web site and not so much like an official club. I'd have to vote no on the card. Just doesn't seem worth the fuss to me.

There's quite a history to recall here, several topics to touch on. Some of it may feel blunt talk to y'all, but it's the truth as I see it.

Agreed...A long time ago, many of us here kicked around the concept of becoming a real club, with dues, elected officers, maybe a monthly/quarterly publication, and a national meet. Considering the response we have seen to two national meets, and to the suggestion of joining a full time official club that has FMC blessings (and clout) already in existence, it is my humble opinion that not much would come from us getting legit in the real world. We would pay-in dues, get a membership card, and do what...That we have not already done on our own? I have to say that a real club would not improve anything over what we have going on right now.

Joining the IMOA was a good idea meant to fill the gap betweeen real and cyber-world clubs, and even now we can get anything we want published in the IMOA's Quicksilver mag, and enjoy their international coverage. But, honestly, not many of us here got that excited over joining when it was an idea, moreso when it became necessary to enjoy some of their membership activities, i.e. lap of the Brickyard. National real-time membership drew serious resistance, IMHO, forming a real-time club would not work today, not as well as we are working right now. However, I conceed that it was back then, and this is now, and things change.

If y'all want to get real, go for it. But, y'all didn't get behind the IMOA test drive, so, a real-time club is (cough)..."Folly."

What we have working for us here and right now, works for us. Plastic credit-card style of ID cards? Ummm...Okay...Let me bounce this ball a few times, yeah, it's got air, so....Tell me why? Who do I show it too? Hold it up to my screen cam?

Ummm...This idea inspires me to think about other applications where a hard credit-card like thingy could work. Luggage tag? Refer mag? Oh yeah...My most prized MM possession ever (other than my MM), is a simple desktop paper weight given to me by our own JeffersonMo and his lovely wife Elizabeth, on their trip to Chicago last Xmas. It's a godshead wheel centercap mounted on a 2X2X1" block of marble, and I really love it. So, a virtual club ID card with my screename on could see other great uses, including a home crafted paper weight. I'll take three cards.

MartyO and I produced lapel pins over two years ago, and they sold fast at 20 bucks a set, which also threw some coins at MM.Net operating costs. Just after that, MartyO and I developed the first run of fender badges, the second run of which Logan just wrapped up earlier today. Both make great refer mags too, easy to craft on your own. One lapel pin is a round MM.Net godshead "National Member" pin, and the other a "Two Percenter" fender badge style pin. I believe Logan still has some available, maybe once he settles in and "works out the bugs" from his new address, he'll peek in here and respond?

As for the stickers mentioned ^ there, if they are the stickers delivered to MV-1 by Logan, they DO wear well. I had a set on my MM for about four winter and six summer months, and they wore as well as any exterior sticker will wear. Wouldn't take much to turn them into magnets, and if the interest is high enough, I'm sure they can be made available again. It would be nice if they were reflective too, hint hint. Moreover, there are many MM.net logo clothing items available through Mark's "Channel D" store, his link is on our home page, mouse around there, eh?

The Motor City Marauders membership sticker is a knock-off of the original National Member design, and any regional chapter can have their own too. The Windy City Marauders do not have any organization, but maybe someday it will. Frankly, I'm more proud of being a "National" member than anything else, but my point is, is that a lot of this collector/memorbilia stuff is already going on. All one has to do is mouse around at our links, maybe really use the search function? Do you know we have MM.Net crystal Xmas tree ornaments? Custom engraved coil cover inserts? Yeah...We have done a lot of things, we just don't remember them.

IMHO, I'd like to see a high quality sew-on patch, but I scouted the loom setup charge myself and frankly, once I considered how many of us actually buy the stuff we promise to buy from threads like this, fronting the startup money is deal breaking. Truth be known, y'all can get almost anything y'all want and any way you want it, but agreement on what that will be, is forever elusive. Lots of dreamers out here, eh? Been there, did this, and I do not fancy doing it again, because of the dreamers...

Oh...I missed that fine point, my bad. Well then...Where will you start?

Edit with added thought...

We have tried to get some diecast stuff started up too, 1/43, 1/24 and even 1/18 stuff. Franklin/Danbury Mint quality stuff, but we would settle for cheaper thingys I suppose, and the e-bay handcrafter got some attention from us as well. It's out there, if you can accept the quality of it all...

What else have we already tried to do, and passed on?

OMG! I almost fell out of my chair!! Man, that was funny! LOL!

I'm totally with you SergntMac... Even though a new member, I can see a lot of the cool things all of you have done for MM enthusiasts on this site. However, I'd like to say that I will gladly support, well... just about any activity/event here, (unless it's completely retarded) because the community and enthusiasm embodied on this site is just awesome. Yeah, I'll buy a card for $5, even if it's only for me to look at and maybe show my friends. Why? Because I love my MM and everyone on this site loves their's too! That makes us all alike... a little bit. Hey, I'll take a sticker and a t-shirt too if available! Count me in for all the.... stuff.
SergntMac, although past support for these ideas may have been less than expected/wanted, I'm thinking that this site has grown and there are a lot more of us here now. I know I'm game for, (maybe not necessarily official club status... since a LOT of work would be involved for those brave enough to take up the task) many of the things mentioned in this thread. Maybe you should give the expanded members a shot at keeping the pledged support they promise in their posts... (HINT HINT... if you say, then do it guys!).

I recently sent in my application for IMOA. I'm waiting for paperwork from Motor City Marauders. I will be a proud member of each of these organizations. I would LOVE to say the same about MM.net.

Logan, you're awesome.

I would support the above-mentioned endeavors. I would purchase a decal/pin/card/t-shirt. What about a combo deal? I am not familiar with the work required to produce such items, but I know that when I owned an SS I belonged to NAISSO and some of the local events were a blast. (I wish more local Marauder owners had contact) What is the significance of the 2% pin? I thought about buying one, but have no idea what it means!! I don't have a lot of time, but would be willing to offer help if someone (or a group) wants to tackle the job of design, etc.

I understand that past items have been produced, but pickin's are slim for us recent converts. I inquired if any of the group purchases from the past have been kept in inventory by anybody, and my post went unanswered.

What is the significance of the 2% pin? I thought about buying one, but have no idea what it means!Back when L/M was deciding to produce the Marauder or not, some internal memos supported a position that the aftermarket would benefit as well, because "two percent" of the MM owners would become outlaws, and mod their cars beyone their prediction. Kenny Brown pulled this reference out and declared us so.

Like outlaw bikers were once declared "one percent" of the motorcycle crowd by the AMA, we are the outlaws of the Marauder world. It's safe to say we have held up our end.
