Recently I have notice a melting plastic/rubber smell when my heater is on, but only when the car is sitting still, or going very slowly (<20mph). I looked under the hood and all around in the car and all I found was leaves on the inlet for the ventilation, removed them but the smell is still there sometimes. Any Ideas?

I don't know if the problem exist today, but all of my previous Ford's had problems with a/c power harness connectors (under dash), bad connections=heat and melted insulation, of course it took about 15 years before the problem developed.

Did any of the debris make it past the screen into fan blower housing? This happened to me on a ford f-250 the ceramic resistor caught leaves on fire inside blower housing.Thick smoke came blasting out of vents and defroster outlet on dash.It was easy to remedy, just a little messy.
