Hi,

This is for my 89 wagon. I want to have someone swap a posi differential carrier into my standard rear end. Same gears.

Anybody know a relatively local shop with shims that you would be comfortable recommending?

Thanks
Jay

Jay,
A fellow co-worker who was from there said to check out Springtech in the Bronx. Keep us posted.

Well,

I could use another referral if anybody has one.

Springtech would take on the job with all new parts, so any other favorite shops?

PS

I'd probably just buy a set of shims and do it myself but my right arm will be useless for the next several months. Rotator surgery again.

You too ehh? I am pretty mobile after six days, 4 weeks should be at 60%. Good luck with both projects.:)

Hey Barry,

That's great that you feel good.

Last time it took me 5.5 months of therapy & at that point I put in a new tear and poped a staple. So go slow. It's not easy if you drive a Marauder, you probably want it all fast.

Hi,
I live on Cape Cod and take care of RFOverlord (Bob) and Mary's MM. I could do the gears in a one day trip for you. I know Yonkers is a ride, but just thought I'd throw in another suggestion.

Cape Cod is not too bad a trip in the off Season.

You have a shim kit and a guage?

I might be up to a long ride in a week or two.

I could still pass wrenches.

Jay,
If you buy Ford Motorsports ring and pinion along with Pinion Seal, Inner and Outer Pinion Bearings and Races, Limited Slip Additive from FORD, I reuse the original shim that is in your rear end now.
Has never failed me yet. Ask Bob, he is the MM I did. The others are not MM's but fords, like Mustangs, etc. with 8.8 rear axle.
If interest call my boss Scott at 508-771-4439 and make an appointment.
Thank You for your interest.

Hi Ron,

I'm not looking to replace the pinion & ring gears, just swap out the original open differential with a posi unit.

I'm told that usually the original shims work, but not always. I've been trying to find someone with a shim kit so the job can be finished if different shims are needed.

Jay

I must go offline now, so tomorrow.

Thanks again

Jay: I don't know how I missed this thread. One of my buddys has his own shop in Mamaroneck. Hit me on my cellphone (914) 582-6262 or with a PM if you are interested.

Ron Hi,

No apoligy necessary. You want to help. I need help.

I've written down the number and if local doesn't work out, a short road trip might be in order.

Thanks Again,
Jay

Will have shims left over after I get done with the one that grenaded @ work! Will post pictures later - spectacular pinion failure! The techs @ Smithtown Ford couldn't believe it when I showed it to them @ the parts counter!

There's always something breaking in new and dramatic ways.

Where did you get a shim kit? Ford only sells them one shim at a time.

Jay: Were you able to reach my friend?

Hey Marty,

Yes I did, seems like a nice guy. Knew exactly what I was talking about.

The car should be out of the paint shop next week and will go to Mamaroneck shortly after Thanksgiving if all works out.

Then it will need new Leather seat bottoms.

I'll keep you posted when a date is firmed up.

Jay,
It came w/the new ring & pinion set from Ford - had a disclaimer that after you opened the package you couldn't return it! You're welcome to what ever is left when I set up the rear in the pickup!

Jay,
Here's the pictures - sorry they're so late (I was too lazy to down load them out of the camera). The shim kit PN from Ford is 3C3Z-4663-BA. They run from .015" thru .030". I used the .023" shim - the rest are for you if you want/need them!

Hi Paul,

I believe the shims in that kit are the pinion gears shims. I was looking for the differential shims. I'd like to know I am wrong though as a frriend of mine wants to do the same swap in his Mark VII Bill Blass.

In any case the new diff is in, (no more one wheel peels).

A friend of Marty's (Jim) did the job all seems AOK so far.

Thank's Marty, Brian , Roy & Paul !

They most certainly are pinion shims - sorry for not picking up on that. Glad you got the posi installed!
