Serious transmission Failure
Planetary gear assembly, sun gear and output shaft all have to be replaced in my transmission (cost $662). This is well beyond the soft rebuild kit that I bought from Dennis Reinhart.

This is a continuation of my last thread called "Help! 2nd Transmission Gone".
I didn't add on to this thread because too many would not likely have looked at it.

The reason for the failure of these parts is that the stub shaft broke into two pieces and metal was floating in the transmission. (I drove the car in 2nd gear for 10 miles. And it is possible that I caused more damage by driving the car.)

I'm not sure that having a higher performance planetary gear (multiple gears), if available, would have been any better. If I'm spending money I might as well consider upgrading. Even wth an upgrade, the planetary gear would have most likely failed because metal got in the moving gear parts of the planetary gear.

I will be installing the Reinhart upgrade for clutches, valve body that I have already bought along with the new planetary, sun gear and output shaft.

My questions are: Is there any upgrade for my failed parts? Or do I replace with standard Ford parts?

My questions are: Is there any upgrade for my failed parts? Or do I replace with standard Ford parts? When the AOD in my '93 LX failed a few months ago, I bought a core 4R70W from a local dismantler,
and used it's guts in the AOD. Not only did I get the wide-ratio planetary set, but the core trans also
had the mechanical diode in it. Sweet. Paid $300 for the core, but got way more than that in parts.
The core I bought came from an F150, and the internals were still in great shape.

You might call around and see what's available in your area. Yes, it's a bit of a pig-in-a-poke, but
if you pull the pan before you buy, you should be able to get a read on the general condition.
Also, if you turn the output shaft, you'll be able to hear if it's got the mechanical diode.
