:banned: Has anyone got one of these?

I haven't, yet! But I'm afraight it might show up shortly in my mail box.

It happened Tuesday morning just at the end of rush hour on 42nd street in midtown. At first I was stuck in traffic near a construction site by times square, then the road completely cleared up and I, along with a pack of yellow cabs charged for the west side.

The NYPD Traffic cops were still in the middle of intersections waving everyone through but having a yellow light in front of me I glanced in my rearview when I was considering to stop didn't see anyone, glanced at the traffic cop again and he was still waving, so me and about three taxis in front and around me went for it. I glanced in the rearview again and I coulda swore I saw a flash of that red light camera taking a pic.

Any idea how those tickets work? What the fines are? & most importantly: How do I fight them?

any advise would be appreciated. just so you know I wouldn't run a red light on purpose. I thought about stopping but didn't want to slam on my brakes when I saw the yellow and honestly thought I had enough time to cross over. How long do these camera light tickets take to reach my house via mail? I'm concerned.

If that traffic agent waved you through the intersection in between the light change, then that picture that you think you might get in the mail will also show the traffic agent waving traffic through the intersection so don't worry about it.

I think I'm nuts for even worrying about this without even having gotten the ticket...

but for some reason its really buggin me right now, so I can't help it.

what if?

Again Don't stress yourself. if it comes the picture will have the unformed traffic agent in the intersection directing cars through against the red light so relax...

Those cameras have been their for many years, The ticket goes to the cars owner ,but the owner is not given the ticket against he's licence , (No points)only a nice fine.

Traffic cameras have been in use in Europe since the 1970's. Washington, DC has a few as does Fairfax County, VA. There is currently alot of resistance to "Photo Red" cameras in Virginia because of privacy concerns. Personally, I like 'em if they cut back on red light runners, which is a very big problem in this area. Statistics show that they work. DC got in trouble with their system since the contract operator got paid on the volume of tickets generated ... it was discovered that they "short-timed" the yellows in order to boost tickets.

I wouldn't worry about it until the 8x10 glossy shows up in your mailbox. The camera is set for a given period after the red and snaps a photo of your car complete with license plate numbers. The photo is overprinted with the details, timestamp, location, how many seconds after red, etc. I think the only way to beat the ticket is to attack the technical set-up or timing of the camera (difficult at best). Not even sure that you can contest it if you were not driving -- if you lent the car to someone -- they will let you take the hit and you can work it out with your buddy.

Sometimes I think much of the resistance to this technology is because some people don't want photos rememberances mailed to the house picturing a blonde in the passenger seat if the wife is a brunette (if 'ya know what I mean, Vern).

Dont worry, it was prolly just tourists since you were at 42 st. , plus the ones on 42st are not active, most of the ones around the city aren't, they are just there to deter.

That's interesting. Did you know PSP parks empty marked cars at strategic places as a control measure.

Also, I accidently drove into an EZ Pass lane at the Bedford exit on the PA Turnpilke. The nice lady mildly scolded me, and handed me a card with instructions to deal with the "mail" that came in a few weeks, showing my license number, and the rear of the MM. Cost me $1.50, which was the toll from Breezwood to Bedford, and not the $45+ tag for going through it.

yeah its really funny, there are about 30 or so in the bronx and only maybe 5 work. I heard its some weird law, the city cant turn them on. And to make it worse they have to mark them prior with sign that say "red light corridor". When I first got my car I one, I think it was like 50 or so, but its prolly gone up like every other ticket.

Sorry, I thought everyone was familiar with the Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney, R.I.P.) tagline quote. Guess Not !!! :dunno: Know Whadda Mean, Vern (http://www.geekamerica.com/03042003/Ernest/) Certainly, nothing personal meant in the post.

Traffic cameras have been in use in Europe since the 1970's.

Yeah I got one of those tickets while in Germany. For 2 KPH or roughly 3 MPH over the speed limit. I got the ticket (in German of course) and the picture in the mail about a month after it happened. They tracked me down through the rental car company. It cost me < $20 for the fine and about another $50 in phone calls to figure out how to pay it without further penalty.

To this day I have nightmares that the next time I go to Germany I'm going to get arrested for a 2 KPH ticket that never got paid correctly.

Have you heard the story about the guy that got a photo/speeding ticket? He took a photo a $50 bill and mailed it in....the cops mailed back a photo of handcuffs......he paid the fine:)

Don't know if it is true, but it makes a good story!

I had asked about using this once before .CLICK HERE>>>>>Photoblocker (http://www.photoblocker.com/) This is the only answer but some places do not allow them so just don't get pulled over and you'll be ok.

OK......more myth or fact.......just coat the license plate with a light shot of clear hairspray:):):)

myth....
the idea behind it is to make the plate so reflective it will over expose the picture, making the numbers look like a big flash. I heard mix results on some spray(i think it was photoblocker), and the plastic ones that go over your plates are illegal in most states.

The red light camera's are a money maker. NYC collects the fine and Zero points are assessed to your driving record. No one fights them because you can't win and it is not worth the effort.
