On my previous CVPI and Chev 9C1, I was able to remove the key from the ignition while the car was running.

This is something I really appreciated in the fridgid weather.

Is there a quick was to do this? (On the Chev you could grind the last bump off of the key)

If there is a member of the Crown Vic board, maybe you could cross post this for me, I'm sure someone there knows.

Thanks in advance.

why would you want to do that? if it is so you can leave the motor running and the car locked while it warms up couldnt you just lock it with the key fob or even manually then unlock with key fob or keypad? i dunno might work never tried.

My remote starter allows this.

You can lock the car with it running using the key pad and unlock with the pad again. I have done it a couple of times but am not really comfortable with leaving my keys in the car.

My last car had remote start which allowed me to remove the key while it was running. I keep meaning to get it in the MM but never seem to get around to it.

Here in South Florida we do not have the problem with cold weather, but with hot weather. I the just lock the car with it running & use my keyless entry number to get back in. I would recommend a hidden switch to disable the the brake light circut, so vehicle cannot be removed out of park. Our police cars have this feature (shifter disabler).

^^^ This sounds interesting... Can you provide a little more detail as to how it was done?

Ford has very good remote start unit that will allow you do just that. And the car can't be driven away till you put your key in and turn it :)

You need to step on your brake pedal in order to shift out of park. The transmission locks the shifter out. I'm pretty sure this was to keep junior from shifting the car while mommy ran into the store for a second.

The only thing you would need to do to lock the transmission would to be to locate your brake pedal's sender unit (to the lights) and install a switch to open the circuit.

No brake light-y, no shift-y.

I have done this and it works. My agency liked it and purchaceda kit with a hidden switch that needs to be pushed each time you shift from park. The down side is, everytime you step on the brake, it makes a little clicky sound. This is normal and you get used to it. On our cars, the brake light switch is the way to go. Just hide the switch real good.
