View Full Version : 6-Disc changer woes

After a year and a half of working flawlessly, my 6-disc changer is suddenly not working properly. It will start off OK, but if you change function to the radio or cassette player, the changer will not play when you switch back to it and just sends an error message. Anyone else have this problem? And what will the dealer do to fix it? :help:

Would help to know the error message, but, in two years of use, mine has never missed a beat. The dealer willl probably replace it under warranty, I would think. I doubt the cost involved would warrant pulling it and sending it out for repair.

The dealer should replace it, as long as you didnt change the rear gears, reflash the PCM or tint the windows.

Why would a dealer void the warranty for tinting the windows. Probably 90% of the autos in Florida have tinted windows.
Just curious. Did that happen to you?

I have had the same thing happen with my CD changer unit (maybe 3 times total in the 14 months that I have had the car). All three times have been after a while of use (45-60+ minutes), shutting down for a rest stop break, and recranking in 10-15 minutes. I get an error message or the function just plain can't find the CD Jukebox. My solution has been to eject the 6 CD cartridge and then just reload it. Hasn't happened in the past 6 months. Gee, thanks for bringing this up !!! :D

MikeNo, we are just commenting on car manufacturers tendencies to try and blame problems on unrelated modifications.

Yeah, like replacing the Canadian summer air in the tires with American winter air causes premature tire wear.

No, this is simply not true. I'm not sure where this rumour started but I can tell you firsthand that this is not the case. I used nothing but pure unprocessed Canadian air in my tires since day 1, and still found my rear tires prematurely worn. And I'm pretty anal about these little details: I went so far as to have my Canadian air balanced before inflation (it's quite conceivable that oxygen, being found in pairs atoms ie. OČ that one of the atoms might be slightly heavier than the other and thereby throw the balance of the tire way off).
Tried everything... went up north to the hills and found a service station up there, thinking maybe the mountain air might be the ticket. Nope. Even tried some US air at some point to no avail - I forgot about the exchange rate and ended up with tires about 30% over-inflated once I got back (this was earlier this summer), but that didn't help.
So, no... your statement is completely false.

Okay, okay, back to Johnman's CD changer, K?
Johnman...Hasn't happened to me, so, I don't have any corrective advice. I will say that before you visit the dealer, make sure you can repeat the symptoms on demand.

ROFLMAO! Excellent...
As far as the CD problem, I've reported this happening in some other thread maybe a year ago or so. It happened mostly with home-burned CDs, and involved the moment when switching between CDs. If I remember correctly, it happened more often when cartridge 6 was either loading in or out. Same situation, same error message, and only by removing and reinserting the whole case could I clear the error situation.
In every situation, there is a long pause before it spits out the error message.

The CD changer acts up in cold weather, and humidity. Condensation is an issue. You however, in Texas, are not likely experiencing the cold changes we are when the changer typically acts up.
It will not play MP3'S and home burn't cd's in certain formats.
If your player acts up while using comercially burnt cd's, go to your dealer and have it replaced under warranty.

Same thing - # 1 slot!
I ran a lens cleaner disk throught it from that slot and no problems...

Yeah, it seems to be the number 1 slot that does it, but it doesn't matter if it's a home-burned disc or a commercial one. I think I'll try a lens cleaner, and if that doesn't work I'll take it to the dealer.

He's actually sold this car and I believe he's in an SRT Charger these days.
Compressed air fixed the same problem I was having.

Probably good to resurrect this info for all the 2nd and 3rd generation owners. Some homemade/burnt cds have problems in the changer particularly noticeable in the #1 slot. Switch 'em around might help. It did for me -- no recurring problem since April 2004.
I am having the same issues and with a real honest to god store bought CD. Maybe I will try cleaning it.
Just for the heck of it, I might try an Asia CD I have that was made in 83 or 84.
