View Full Version : Another gauge question

Any comments on using AFR and EGT gauges would be appreciated. I'm considering getting these and putting them in a dash pod similar to what Big Joe P has.

I'm thinking one wide band O2 sensor mounted at the front end of the x-pipe will sample from both sides. One EGT sensor for each side between the collectors and cats with a 2-channel gauge sounds like the best way to accurately make use of EGT readings.

The problem I have is that Autometer doesn't have two matching Ultra-Lite gauges to do this. The small gauges only have a single channel EGT while the big gauges do not offer an AFR. Also, the indicators don't really match too well either. So I'm thinking of possibly something digital. But it needs to look at least a little bit like the Autometer gauges I have everywhere else.

Suggestions???

I've been thinking 'bout EGT gauges. Please post your progress!

I mounted a Nordskog digital AFR gauge using the Ford steering column pod mount (I think the pod was your find originally). The read out is nearly useless as it yo-yos up and down constantly. Reading another post suggests that it may be because its sensing from a bung in the front cats rather than the rear. I'm interested in how yours works out 'cause it would be nice to have a useful read out.

I don't get the Air-Fuel Ratio guage thing some of you guys have. It is being controlled by the PCM and the only possible thing it could warn you about is an injector or the fuel pump gone south and by the way the engine will be running it is already gonna be obvious somethings wrong.

Lots of more important things to monitor, IMHO. Trans temp, oil temp, rear end temp...

...passenger front seat bottom moisture! :D

I see, by your signature, that you've added a remote gas door. How hard was that to do?

Thanks.

Yeah, me too!

OK - back on topic! Gotta go with Dave on this one - maybe EGT if you're running NOx but even then it will be too late by the time the gauge reads too high!

I also agree with your assessment on the NOx but two EGT pyrometers would be usefull if we had a dual-turbo set-up like the ones Gale Banks has, then we'd know if something was up with the waste-gates' sychronization.

Back off topic, Mr. 427435 (I assume that cryptic nick has to do with an engine and it's hp rating) I completed the job (you can find it detailed at the thread MM02MOK listed) in 2hrs., after the painting and parts were all in hand.

All too easy.

OK, everybody can go back on topic now. :D

As many of us have seen when making minor changes to air boxes, intake tubes, exhaust systems and such, these minor changes can change the AFR, necessitating a re-tune. If you can monitor this yourself, you don't have to go get strapped to the dyno and hooked to a wide-band every time, only if you see that the car NEEDS a re-tune.

But I'm already looking at all the "important" stuff IMHO.

Well, I'm not going along the same old conventional path that most others follow. I'm putting a water (water/methanol) injection system on my car. EGT is very useful in setting up the water system, such as setting up turn-on points and selecting nozzle sizes. So if I put in a pyrometer, which side should I choose? Eenie, meenie, miney, BOTH.

This looks really nice, now if I can find a EGT gauge that matches it pretty closely, I'll be set.

Thanks for help rather than criticism!
