View Full Version : Tuning after exhaust kit install ?

I just received the complete kooks kit and will have it installed in the coming days to a local shop. (YES!!)
I am worried about the effect of this install on the engine, I mean, what is generally happening ?
- Does the engine run RICHER or LEANER ?
- Does the computer read and adjust accordingly to the new found scavenging possibilities ?
To summarize, i don't want to run into a too lean condition after this install . If it's not optimum until my next visit to a competent tuner, no problem. But if a professionnal check is mandatory within this install, i'd like you guys to tell me.
Thanks for your help.

When I changed my complete exhaust system, SVO shorties, hi-flow cats, x-pipe, 18" magnaflows all 2.5" pipe, my air fuel ratio went a little richer and I had it adjusted by tuner, the difference was minor, and rich is not dangerous like lean. I hope you recieve replies specific to the Kooks. :)

Since you are not running the stock program and being only exhaust work I think you will be aok!

You're fine man. No need for any adjustments.
Be aware, I blew out my collector gaskets the first time on a dyno. The ones supplied, (go between the header and cat connection), are of a paper nature.
If you replace them, do it yourself, really easy with only a floor jack and some box end wrenches. Order COPPER collector gaskets from Summit Racing for $1.60 each.

Look at it all from this point of view? By the time your burned exhaust gas reaches your new Kook's headers, it's burned gas, right? The "lean/rich" of that burn took place before anything reaches the exhaust process, or, any header/manifold involved in pulling it away from that process.
Keep in mind that a smart tuner will know how to exploit your Kook's header mod for what it's worth, and he may want to play with spark tables and other stuff, knowing that your improved exhaust system is in place. But, if he did not know this, he should not experiment.
So, your "worst case scenario" is that you do not retune after adding Kook's headers, therefore, you do not get the full benefit of this mod. However, the next time you do retune, you will, and you shouldn't have any problems between these events.

Thanks everybody for your tips and info. I also made some prints of the "knowledge bank" of this site to hand more info to the installer. It should be OK.
I'll have to wait a little more time for the retune part. Last time, i went at the PHP shop, it was a 1800 miles round trip. Worth it but ... some distancel. That's why i'm waiting for the tuning part!
Thanks again
