Now I don't recommend this, nor do I plan on doing it again, but the attached photo will show you what your gas gague looks like when ou have 1.4 gallons left. I was able to put 17.6 gallons in right after this photo, which was taken with the car still running.

I have gone 340 miles once. The light lasts about 40 miles.

I would replace the fuel filter. NOW!

Aw come on Paul, can you give a little more precision on that number?
My record fill was 17.630 on 5/22/2004.
I just wanted all of that dirt out of the gas tank to clog up my fuel filter so I'd have an excuse to upgrade to the high-flow filter.
Didn't work.

Be Careful Folks....Don't assume all our MM gauges will show the same at LOW fuel levels....You might be thumbing a ride to the nearest gas station.
Also; It's NOT a good idea to let your tank get that low, as the fuel pump is cooled by the gas in the tank. I used to run my truck's tank down to fumes all the time UNTIL my fuel pump got noisy and then finally died.
THATS good to know my pontiac will shut off way before it gets that low.

Paul - That's a good way to check the low fuel warning light. :D

I believe mine goes lower...
And it's true that they all do not register the same. There is actually a TSB out on the fuel sending unit. On some cars the effect is worse than others, but the problem ones move off full very, very quickly if they will even go all the way to full. Then they go way, way below empty. Safer than running out at 1/4 tank, though!

I filled my with just over 16 gallons just last week and my needle was above the E mark.
Does the system actually hold more than 19 gallons?

Any information on the TSB? Years/VINs effected?

I would say that pump makes good money for it's owner...19.4 may not be 19.4...know what I mean...willie

Agreed on the fuel cooling the fuel pump. I lost a fuel pump in my '93 Camaro Z28 after running it pretty much empty. First it made noise when the gas level was that low, filled it up, no noise, then it went out.

:) Agreed. I start looking for gas before I get down to 1/4 tank for that very reason. Learned the hard way like most things. :alone:

It's posted somewhere in these forums, just search awhile and you'll find it.

Paul, I think I've managed to put in 1 more gallon than you did, at one point, several weeks ago. I can doublecheck once I get back, but I think there have been many many times where I have filled my tank with the amount you did this time. I try not to (for reasons mentioned earlier) but it was a matter of getting used to the MM's (non)linearity of the gas gage (and considering I travel about 80 miles a day).
As for the total capacity, it's a matter of knowing how the manufacturer came to measure the tank capacity. ie. did they include the whole filler neck? If so, where did they stop? Does this include any sort of emergency reserve capacity and if so, how much? etc.
Example: before storing my TAs, I fill the tanks to the absolute top to avoid moisture problems. My '98 WS6 is quoted as having a 15.5 gallon tank, which works out roughly to just under 59 liters. The fuel gage on the 98 F-bodies is pretty much the ONLY year ever where the reading on the dash was linear... in 1999 they went with a bigger plastic tank, and that farked up the linearity of the gage once again. Even though the linearity on my own gage suffered a *bit* when I had the level sender replaced on warranty years back, it's still pretty decent compared to my other cars, and in this case was reading just under 1/4 tank.
This time, I put in over 60 liters by the time I saw a steady fuel level up at the top of the neck (I always fill to this level before storage, to allow for some consumption as I drive the car back home to tuck it away for the winter).
60 liters is about 16 gallons. In addition to what was already in there, however much. So there is a fair amount of fuel that can be contained in the filler neck. Again, the quoted capacity of the 'tank' was 15.5 gallons. Say I had 2-3 gallons left. Would the long wide filler neck hold that much in itself?
