View Full Version : Experience with my TCC Switch

Recently there have been some threads related to annoying shifting / TCC functions, be it stock or other. (Matt in Detroit and Mrdr Jack) Let me share my experience with my add-on TCC switch that I have had now for 6 months or so. I know some will ask why add such a switch, my answer is that you just do not get it and you should just go to another thread!! Others may say this switch is a technical no-no.

This switch is sweeet!! It’s as useful as the stock OD lock-out switch. No, make that better. I mounted it on the front side of the shifter and is easily finger activated. Say I’m in 3rd gear, use the brakes to slow for a corner (the brakes will open the TCC after a second or so), I open my switch during braking and upon acceleration from the corner I do not have that annoying TCC lock-up until I want it to. (I know, just push the gas pedal harder) I can hold the TCC open in 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear. I could go on and on. In a way it’s a big tease for an autostick!!! Vendors !!!

I asked 7 knowledgeable folks before I did this; 2 car savvy Electrical Engineers, 2 car savvy Computer Engineers, 2 good ASE technicians, and 1 good man from this MM site. The vote was 6 to 1 that this TCC switch will not hurt anything, but I may see the CEL come on.
This switch in the purple/tan (?? I forget) wire that sends the voltage to the TCC solenoid. It simple creates an open circuit, or a closed circuit. Remember, an open circuit has no current flow, no heat build-up etc…. The PCM had better have motional EMF protection, or we all in deep do-do.

My initial use of the switch caused the check-engine-light (CEL) to come on. I have learned that used under the slightly wrong circumstances, the green dash OD light will flash, and in the blatantly wrong circumstances, the CEL will come on. The car’s sensors detect abnormal relationships and sends an error signal. As the ASE technicians told me, just drive the car for several days w/o using the switch, the computer will sense all is normal and the light will go out. Either I have become very good at this switch use, or the car is adapting somewhat, or both, but the lights have not come on in months.

The conditions under which the lights will not come on are 1) under at least light acceleration 2) over 18 mph. Steady speed or deceleration is a no-no. I try to use it such that I am initiating an open circuit to the already open PCM circuit. The ASE technicians warned me not to use this switch for a while prior to going in for emissions test, good point.

Anyway, have a good Christmas, Chanukah, or whatever. Hope Santa puts a preluber in your stocking!!
