I got some upgraded speakers, primarily for the woofer. I already have JBL coaxials in the doors and deck. The new ones are MB Quart with 6-1/2" mid-woofers and 3/4" tweeters. I used one of the mid-woofers to replace the factory sub (haven't installed in the car yet to test so I can't say how it sounds yet) and am thinking about installing the tweeters in the cover panels for rearview mirror mounts. Anybody done this? How does it sound? I suppose I should use the crossovers that came with the system, but should I connect a load resistor where the woofers would ordinarily connect? The input to the crossover would be connected in parallel with the full-range door speakers.
Thanks in advance. Sorry if it's old news, just post a link please.

Valleyman did something like this. Sounded good when I took a ride. If I remember, he added some in the back also...better check with him.

I was thinking about doing that myself, or perhaps putting them on top of the dash. I would perfer the doors, but I have two concerns:
1. The mirror mounts on both doors appear to be at slightly different heights, not sure if this will have any impact on sound quality.
2. This location provides no protection from rain once the door is open. I'd hate to lose an expensive Boston Acoustics tweeter if I had to get out of the car in a rain storm.

FordNut, I had a complete system put in my car consisting of a new head unit with XM radio front speakers including tweeters and they managed to get the tweeters mounted on the inside of the door panel. I can find out size if you want. I also have two 500 watt amps and to 10 inch subs in thje trunk. It sounds great. They mounted the amps in the trunck where the factory sub was.

Fordnut -- I put the tweeters in those front door sail panels and am extremely happy with the result. Mine are Infinities but I'm too lazy too go find the model number right now. I buried the crossover inside each front door panel right under the window switches.
The main sonic improvement is because high notes are so directional as opposed to low notes, and the OEM setup has the front speakers right at knee level in the front. I don't hear with my knees so much of the highs are lost on me. Once you move the tweeters up closer to ear level and point them at your ears the highs become much clearer, more noticeable, and the sound stage improves dramatically, like 1000% better. In fact, it was so much better that I did the same thing in the back -- took out my Kenwoods, put in the Infinities, and mounted the rear tweeters on the C pillar above and behind the seat belt mounts. I'm mucho happy with the result.

Valleyman,
Any pictures of the setup? I would like to see some more pictures of the tweeter install up front. Any chance that they could be flush mounted or close to it or is there not enough room behind there?

Any ideas on this?

How big are the crossovers that came with your system? Great idea on the rears, may have to explore that idea too. Don't get a lot of rear seat passengers though, so it may not be worth the trouble in my particular situation. One of the Ford techs told me about tweeters being mounted in the overhead console in some models also, you may want to look into that if you're a true audiophile.

Sounds like a great system. I'm not going to that extreme, but since the woofers I bought came with some nice tweeters I thought I ought to put them to use.
Thanks for the input, y'all

Fordnut -- sorry no pics because I don't have a digital camera but the photo Directedby attached is pretty much how mine looks. The only difference in my setup is that my tweeter sits in an angle ring much like the type you use for an Autometer guage so that the tweeter can be "aimed." The angle ring came with the Infinities as did a flush mount option. The photo Directedby has shows the door open; when the door is closed it really looks like an OEM setup. It's not that noticeable, visually (I painted my tweeter body with the interior paint color from Ford).
I noticed a slight difference in the left and right sail panels when I did the install but my tweeters are mounted at the exact same height. The difference in sail panel size is so small that it doesn't cause any visual asymmetry. Forget about flush mounting. Unless your particular tweeter is no thicker than a poker chip there just won't be any room in there to do it.
My crossovers are about the size and shape of my hand, palm and fingers. There's plenty of room in the door panel for them. I didn't attach mine in any way, no velcro, bracket, etc. With the attached wiring and wrapping them once around with the thinnest carpet pad I could find they nestled right in there, no problem.
I put the rear tweeters in for me not for passengers because I'm usually the only one in the car. I can not overstate how much more dramatic the soundstage is with rear tweeters that point toward my head at ear level rather than up at the rear window. It is muuuuch better. You'll really like it. Sorry about the no photos but I hope this helps.

Ford Nut, I had a 1998 Taurus Limited. It had what looks to be the same aera insidde of the mirror. In 1998 the Limited was a 'feature' car and only 517 of them were made. It had the tweeters that you speak of mounted right inside of the mirrors. There were nice black metal mesh grills over them that completely replaced the flat trim pannel. So, somewhere in the ford parts bin they must exisit. I'm not sure they would fit, but it looks like it.
