OK,.. since 2003 Marauder VINs are not sequential. Lets put the last 6 digits of our VIN and build date (if known) so we can kinda figure out 'where' we are in the build order.

Production numbers for the Mercury Marauder:
2003 - 7839 (327 Blue, 417 Silver, rest black .. 7094)
2004 - 3213 (981 DTR, 987 Silver, 1245 Black)
Total production, 03 and 04 was 11,052

Black exterior. (As of June 2004):
1059 with charcoal interior, 842 have CD changers, 873 have heated seats.
147 with flint interior, 105 have CD changers, 100 have heated seats.
Dark Toreador Red exterior. (As of June 2004):
565 with charcoal interior, 457 have CD changers, 505 have heated seats.
398 with flint interior, 293 have CD changers, 270 have heated seats.
Silver Birch exterior. (As of June 2004):
525 with charcoal interior, 422 have CD changers, 439 have heated seats.

'03 and member 427435 offered one with a build date in April '04. The difference between those two Vin's is 32,799. Since we all know there were not that many MM's made in the entire production run, I'll offer this explanation, based upon experience with early Mustangs.

When the Mustang was introduced it shared the assembly line with Fairlanes and Falcons. Numbers were assigned to the next car down the line, no matter what name plate it had. I suspect this is the case with the MM's with the additional numbers assigned to Grand Marquis or whatever else in going down the assembly line at the time. Think of it as an event counter; as in, whenever something comes past a given place, it gets the next number.

Great. I see several responses. My VIN is 600045, built on March 12, 2002. RoyL states that the first MM was VIN 600028. I know my car is a 4PP (saleable pre-production car). It was the third of four cars built on 3/12/02.

June was a busy month. You fall within the June numbers. The exact date is the only way this will make sense.

You can get that from a Ford (or Lincocln / Mercury) dealer from the computer system they use called OASIS -keeps track of all cars by VIN for service and warranty. I asked when mine was in for service and they gave me a printout -no problem.

The only way this will really show what we have and in what order, is to get EXACT birthdates. June '02 was a very busy build month but I have very few exact dates. I added all those names listed with the last 6 VIN digits from the IMMC website too.

Are they assigned the VIN first thing, and if there's a delay or side-step, that's how the build date would come later than a higher number VIN that was built on-schedule?The rotation # is the sequence of vehicles from 0001-9999, which would be good for at least 10 days on a 500/shift, 2 shift schedule, then it starts all over again. This way the operator on the line will see on his uticor screen that the next vehicle coming into his workstation is rotation # 3276, is a Marauder, and it takes the black carpet. Then the next vehicle would be #3277 and it could be a Crown Vic with police package and take a blue vinyl carpet.

The VIN is assigned as soon as the vehicle begins production. If the paint shop produces a car or two or more out of proper sequence, or the engine line or trim line, or final line make a big screw up, that original VIN is still assigned to that vehicle, even though it may not be shipped until 5 months after the vehicles that were produced right in front and behind it.

And vehicles that could say built June/03 could have been built August/03 when you figure the sticker was placed on the B pillar on a Friday in late June, the plant shuts down for the month of July, and maybe even a layoff in the first week of August.

I'd better stop now. I'm getting a headache. I'm not used to thinking about it and actually trying to put it into understandable sentences. We usually just grunt and yell at each other and things fall into their respective places.:help:

Good catch, although just for the record, the 5/24/2002 appears on a sticker on the engine's rocker arm cover (both sides). I thought that indicated when the car was assembled. However, on my recent visit for a front end alignment last week, I had the dealer run an OASIS check on my car and it stated the build date was 5/31/2002 so I guess it was assembled in its entirety a week later.

jtaI have so few build days but it is already obvious that the build dates are not sequential to the VINs. We'd probably have to get deeper into the VIN for option codes to map that out but we're only collecting the last 6 digits. I also pulled a large number of VINs from cars listed on Autotrader.com so unless any new owner becomes a member, we can only guess at the build month. I only have about 5% of the VINs for the full two year run.

So, in the end, I'm not sure it really tells us much of anything, especially with '03s since the VINs were mixed in with GMs.

How about getting the VIN's off of the cars that are showing up as total wrecks, or are parted out? This way if we do ever get a large percentage of the cars built, we will have the ones that are in MM heaven....

Sounds like a keeper. I'm at the other end of the spectrum with the earliest build date in the club. Roy L Pits states mine is one the first MM's built. My VIN ends with 600045 - built March 2002.
