I am pretty much set with my car except I want to add the cobra exhaust unit that Dennis carries. I just installed the Metco driveshaft loop and it occurred to me after the fact that their may be a problem with the cobra exhaust clearing this loop. Does anyone have both mods? Will I have to re-route the exhaust?
Secondly, and the reason I put this on the Community forum, does ANYONE know where I could get a Dyno-tune in CA? I have Dennis' stock 91 Octane tune for the 9100, but am sure that if I could get the car to Reinharts in person a better tuning job could be done on the Dyno-tune. At least that is what I have read. Since I can't get to FLA, I'm looking for anyone who could do a similar tune over here. I spoke to JBA racing in San Diego a few months ago but don't think they are setup with a Dyno. I found a great mechanic locally who has been building Ford racing cars since the 60's to do all of the install of my mods, but he doesn't know of anyone around this area with a dyno either ( I wish you could see the black 1966 Ford Fairlaine with a 427 he has in his shop. Black leather bucket seats, Hurst shifter, etc. A real screamer. Chevy engine, but he says a few Fords had them. (?) I know some Mustang's had a 428, but this is a sweet setup.)
Thanks as always for any info on either question.

Norm

I have the Cobra exhaust kit from Reinhart, and a driveshaft loop, though not a Metco loop. No problems to report, not even close. As well as I know the undercarriage of my MM, I cannot imagine how, or, where there would be a problem installing the Reinhart kit along with the Metco loop, and I haven't read about that here. Hope this helps?
Dyno tune in CA? Sorry, no 411 on that at all.

Thanks SergntMac. Guess I should consider myself fortunate I found a good mechanic who understands and appreciates the car. Good news on the DS loop, as I didn't want to have to redo that bit.
I'll just have to coordinate with Dennis and continue to get his best tunes remotely. So far they have worked well, but I envy you guys that can get a "hands-on" tune.
Thanks again.

Hi Norm,
Ford made one hell of a 427 back in those days.

I doubt that it's a Chevy 427 (unless someone swapped engines). Ford did NOT use 427 Chevy engines----Ford did build their own 427 engine from 1963 to at least 1967. The 428 (different bore/stroke ratio) was also used from 1967 into the early '70's, but it was more of a torque engine than a high hp engine.

Yep, you're right, and I stand corrected. I just assumed it was a Chevy 427, but it's all Ford. The guy has done a great job of restoring the entire car, and it looks _really_ fast.

Something else to consider....California does something to the gas to help fight emissions. Me and Mrs TR have noticed a slight drop in performance the two times we've driven my 03 down there.
We have to drive down to Mariposa after new years for my Grandma's memorial service. We're taking her 04 this trip, and we'll see if it's any different with her car.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say :bs: on 66 Fairlanes with a Chevy Engine ! ;)
Ford made several versions of their own 427, the side oiler being the most famous. The 427 powered Fairlanes were very limited production.
Yes, Mustangs had 428s in them. However, the 427 was much stronger than the 428. I have a 428 Cobra Jet in my 67 Fairlane. I got the engine out of a 70 Cobra Jet Mustang.

Yeah, how and why would a Ford ever have come from the factory with a Chevy engine? That definately doesn't sound right to me, but if someone knows some specifics about this that I don't, then please share them.

Yes, I guess I am one of a very few members of the net that have this combination and I am very happy with the results for a reasonable amount of money. I originally wanted to go with the Kook's header, but no matter how many times I talked to Kook he would not break the package up and just sell me the headers. I did not want to use the Magnaflow mufflers or pay the money and not use them. So I went with the Ford Racing Cobra ceramic coated shorty headers and the Magaflow Cobra X-pipe and hi-flow CATS.
So back to your question is there a clearance problem with the Metco safety loop and the Cobra headers (DR uses the Cobra iron E/M) which must be used in conjunction with the Cobra X-pipe. The answer is somewhat. The clearance will vary because the X-pipe has to be modified to add a 4" spacer in the X-pipe due to the longer MM wheelbase. This spacer pipe along with the wide stamped edges of the Magaflow CATS casing will reduce clearance on the driver's side to 1/4-3/8" from the loop. I am not aware of any other hi-flow X-pipe that will work except the one Magaflow makes. I have not had a problem and have driven 2,000 miles since Team Ford's Master Mechanic installed them recently. The Metco loop is extremely HD and well made as are their beautiful control arms and Watts linkage which I also installed on the MM. Hope this helps.

Glenn,
How much of a PITA is it to get the headers on the car? Did you dyno before and after?
Tks

Kevin Until Glenn gets back to you, let me add that the Kooks headers weren't all that difficult to get on the heads. But what was a challenging was getting the header bolts in. It took me awhile, but I'd do it again on my car if I had it to do over. It's worth that great sound!!! And It's my guess that the Cobra headers are even easier than the Kooks headers are to install since they're not long tube headers like the Kooks are, but are "shorty" headers.
